Has Trump committed, or will he commit, treason?

"Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort."

Even if his actions (in Helsinki and since) have not crossed the line, he may yet stumble over something that does. His best bet at this point would be to try to define, or move (in the public sphere, i.e. rile up his base), Russia into the category of "not an enemy." If Russia's not an enemy, there's no treason. That's that.

Everyone's concerned that Putin may have something on him, but really, at this stage, what would actually shake his base? There might be something outrageous, even illegal, but the Congress seems unwilling to do anything so far (apparently out of fear of his base), so why would that matter? I'm sure if Putin had something to leak, Democrats would be outraged, but what else is new?

The worst news over the past few days have been the street interviews with his base. They've found one or two moderates who are waffling, but often his base doubles down! "He tells it like it is!" "He has a plan!" "Let that poor, good man do his work!" Etc.

:boggled:

To be fair, our prior president had 8 years to close that down, but allegedly found himself powerless to do so.

To be fair, that is an unfair simplification. Obama was not faultless in the effort to close Gitmo, but there were a LOT of fingers in the pie, especially from the DoD. Read a detailed discussion here.

If there is more to be said, let's take it to a new thread.

ETA: I see that Hlafordlaes has already posted that link. Good, because my repeating it can be considered my view that it is an important article to read to understand the complexities of the situation.

"I told you so! The European Union just slapped a Five Billion Dollar fine on one of our great companies, Google. They truly have taken advantage of the U.S., but not for long!"
I wish the EU also had a case against Amazon and was slapping a billion Euro fine on them, too. Just to watch the contortions when Trump can't decide whether to condemn or cheer.

He'll likely claim that Jeff Bezos is in league with the EU - hence the lack of a fine despite Amazon's deeply unfair tax avoidance - SAD !

"China, the European Union and others have been manipulating their currencies and interest rates lower, while the U.S. is raising rates while the dollars gets stronger and stronger with each passing day - taking away our big competitive edge. As usual, not a level playing field..."

"....The United States should not be penalized because we are doing so well. Tightening now hurts all that we have done. The U.S. should be allowed to recapture what was lost due to illegal currency manipulation and BAD Trade Deals. Debt coming due & we are raising rates - Really?"

It's interesting being pretty clueless on matters of economy, yet being bright enough to know that he's full of ****.

Let's add "economically illiterate" to President Trump's attributes

"Farmers have been on a downward trend for 15 years. The price of soybeans has fallen 50% since 5 years before the Election. A big reason is bad (terrible) Trade Deals with other countries. They put on massive Tariffs and Barriers. Canada charges 275% on Dairy. Farmers will WIN!"

As usual, it would appear that Trump's version of 'a level playing field' or 'fair' circumstance is simply 'whatever means that we win'.

And yes, there have to be winners and losers. Life is a zero sum game.

Doofus.

Who told you that? Life is not a zero sum game. That is one of Trump's problems - he thinks it is.

Interesting perspective:
There's an old saying about American politics that goes like this: the right is interested in power, while the left is interested in fairness. This is why in a fight, the right will always win: they're not playing by the same rules as the rest of us. The Republicans want to gerrymander the hell out of the country, while the liberals want to just make the districts fair. The Republicans want to disenfranchise poor and non-white voters, while the Democrats merely want to keep voting as it is. There's a reason that Democrats keep winning the popular vote and losing the election. If U.S. politics are a see-saw, the Democrats have situated themselves in the center, while the Republicans situate themselves as far to the right as possible. Which way is it tilting, then?

The Canadian dairy tariffs have been discussed at length here. They were applied to compensate for huge subsidies paid to the US dairy industry and they only apply over a tariff free allowance which means that the vast majority of dairy sales to Canada are tariff free.

The price of soybeans is set globally and reflects global supply and demand. The only trade "deal" which has had a major impact on US sales of soybeans was Donald Trump's decision to implement tariffs against China which caused China to buy their soybeans from Brazil instead.

You know you are in denial when places known for responsible, sane journalism and representing experienced and nuanced views from around the globe, have things like this:

Our Kind of Traitor

Kind of dulls the joy of all the Frightard hand-waving about Dems, or whatever lame excuse they are peddling, in their perpetual and trademarked fear of ever manning up.

Trump is following the GOP playbook: spend massively during economic upturn, lower Interest rates, cut taxes, raise debt.
Then lose an election to the Democrats when the economy is off the cliff.
