Does this strike anyone else as ironic?

No, because it can be interpreted in two different ways:
1) DJT is wasting his time striking out at the dogs (read Democrats) who are nipping at his heels which is preventing him reaching his destination, namely, MAGA.
2)Dems are wasting their time nipping at Trump's heels when they should be trying to reach their destination, namely, regaining the reins of power.

Given your political leanings, I suspect you mean 1). Right?

No Trump is afraid everyone is out to get him. And for good reason as Trump screws almost everyone he comes in contact with. Trump thinks he's special and the rules don't apply to him. Law enforcement scares the hell out of him because Trump is a criminal. Neither McCabe or Comey are Democrats. Trump is also angry with his own appointed AG.
Well, he did get to be POTUS.

When it looked like Trump was going to lose the election, he told his followers that he was sure to win and that only a rigged election could stop him.
He was fully expecting to go down in flames, so he preemptively shifted the blame.

He is doing the same now with the Mueller probe: he knows that the report will be very bad for him, so he has to preemptively discredit it.

Except in Trump's paranoid mind. In Trumplandia, every Democrat is out to get him. Hell, he thinks that even Republicans who haven't taken a personal loyalty oath to him are against him.

Isn't that basically what I said? I don't see where we're in disagreement.

I found it ironic because Trump is seemingly unable to ignore the slightest perceived criticism. I think the quote* is saying to reach your goals, you need to focus and not be distracted by petty attacks. Which Trump seems singularly unable to do.

Trump has further commented on the firing

"The Fake News is beside themselves that McCabe was caught, called out and fired. How many hundreds of thousands of dollars was given to wife’s campaign by Crooked H friend, Terry M, who was also under investigation? How many lies? How many leaks? Comey knew it all, and much more!"

And here we see state media with the official story.

Like any bully, the fact that Trump has not had a reckoning for his actions (as of yet) only serves to prove to him that he can keep pushing further and further and not face repercussions.

Of course he has all of government on his side. They have stuck with him this far and why should he think they will turn traitor now?

This is from Andrew McCabe's statement:
The big picture is a tale of what can happen when law enforcement is politicized, public servants are attacked, and people who are supposed to cherish and protect our institutions become instruments for damaging those institutions and people...The release of this report was accelerated only after my testimony to the House Intelligence Committee revealed that I would corroborate former Director Comey's accounts of his discussions with the President. The OIG's focus on me and this report became a part of an unprecedented effort by the Administration, driven by the President himself, to remove me from my position, destroy my reputation, and possibly strip me of a pension that I worked 21 years to earn. The accelerated release of the report, and the punitive actions taken in response, make sense only when viewed through this lens. Thursday's comments from the White House are just the latest example of this.

This attack on my credibility is one part of a larger effort not just to slander me personally, but to taint the FBI, law enforcement, and intelligence professionals more generally. CNN link

The vile piece of garbage currently in residence in the White House then Tweeted:
"The Fake News is beside themselves that McCabe was caught, called out and fired. How many hundreds of thousands of dollars was given to wife’s campaign by Crooked H friend, Terry M, who was also under investigation? How many lies? How many leaks? Comey knew it all, and much more!" Link

Former CIA Director John Brennan then Tweeted back at The Dunce:
"When the full extent of your venality, moral turpitude, and political corruption becomes known, you will take your rightful place as a disgraced demagogue in the dustbin of history. You may scapegoat Andy McCabe, but will not destroy America... America will triumph over you." Link

It looks to me like Trump is losing it. The pressure is too much. Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan urgently need to show some integrity and respond publicly and reassure the American people that they understand we're entering a period of insanity and it needs to stop for the good of all of us. To have the president of the United States acting this way really transcends partisan politics.

But they won't. They are in too deep and really if they betray trump their careers are finished. They will be primaried out. The base supports this behavior, and they need the base to win their parties nomination.

Do we have any evidence based conclusions on if the firing process was normal or abnormal?

We have testimony, already quoted in this thread, from people who have been involved in such actions who say it's abnormal. I'll leave it to you to review who has said what, and to decide for yourself whether this counts as "evidence".

I find that unacceptable regardless of what side they are on.

The sad fact is, the Republican base probably does support The Dunce's actions. They are so mired in bitterness and alienation that they just want to strike out at any target they're provided with. Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan probably won't try and put the brakes on Dumpster but I'm hopeful at some point they will decide this craziness is going too far. That without really taking a position on the bigger issues they may suggest the prez needs to tone it down a bit.

At the recent Conservative Political Action Conference event The Dunce received standing ovations and a straw poll indicated he had over 90% support by the attendees. (So much for conservatives being opposed to the Dumpster.) But many of the conservatives interviewed did take exception to The Dunce's constant Tweeting. That it was beneath his office and needed to stop.
