The Trump Presidency (Act V - The One Where Everybody Dies)

Did anyone else see Trump’s speech last night?

I tuned in part way through.

He sure knows how to play to his crowd. But I thought it was a rambling, smug and self-congratulating mess. Typical for him: insulting others, juvenile name calling, rehashing - yet again - his election victory over Hillary, etc. etc. etc. ad nauseum. Endorsing the PA Republican candidate came late in the speech and was itself Trump-centric..

Crass populism, the likes of which I never dreamed I’d see in my lifetime.

Dropping this in there really undercut his endorsement of any Republican:

It also highlights how exceptionally lazy he is.

How does a man--over 70, who's obese, derisively avoids any physical exercise, drinks 12 cans of diet pop a day, eats fast food--avoid being struck down by a cardiovascular event? Surely god is dead.

I might have added "working in the most stressful job in the world" but The PDJT probably doesn't feel that at all.

What I can't figure out is how is that populism? Why does it manifest as a garbage speaker? Larry flynt is a personal hero of mine, he is a crass populist in a sense, and he is quite eloquent. He is also incredibly self aware.

Why is American populism in such a garbage human?

Because a great many Americans are human garbage.

Oh, gawd, they're hysterical (funny) over there. This is beyond tone deaf, it's out in Asperger's territory.

(For those who haven't seen the original, see the original Instagram post lauding DJT's appointment of not just notebooks full but entire filing cabinets' full of wimminz. https://www.instagram.com/p/BgHFRViFhxo/?taken-by=gop It's a scrollable window.)

That's some ground breaking stuff. He appointed a woman(!!!) as First Lady and yet another woman (!!!) to be Mike Pence's spouse. And 'Vanki is in there, of course. And the Huckabee spawn from hell. It seems nepotism rather than feminism is the marching order.

328,000 huh?

What's he going to do about the nearly billion birds killed in building strikes every year?

The highly likely first mortality factor among USA's birds is.are cat.z: "The impact of free-ranging domestic cats on wildlife of the United States" (2013, Nature Communications, 4:1396, DOI: 10.1038/ncomms2380, PDF). Estimation is between 1.4–3.7 billion (median: 2.4 billion) birds killed annually "in mainland areas of the contiguous United States" by "free-ranging domestic cats".

Trump wants new authority over polling places

I can hear Trump now: "In order to properly secure the election from improper voting I'm sending my SS to carefully monitor polling places across the nation."

The Secret Service has about 4500 agents between the special agents and uniform division. There are about 3100 counties or equivalents in the US. If you just left a bare minimum to serve the president and vice president's details (we'll say 100 agents). You wouldn't have enough agents to assign one per county. Now consider that each county has, on average over 100 polling places.

We'll assume that the FBI is not an option given The Hair's trust issues with DoJ.

So wind turbines still not a major factor.

For the record, mine is an indoor cat. Moose just looks at the birds intently.

So no practical difference, then.

No indeed. Perhaps worse, in fact.

He's thinking of the OTHER SS.

He's thinking of the OTHER SS.

We laugh about that but I occasionally expect that he's going to try to deputize gun wielding citizens to be his presidential force to do stuff like voting security or go out and make citizen's arrests of the undocumented.

I didn't either. When he first announced, I thought he had no chance of getting the GOP nomination. Based on what I saw in New York, Trump does not wear well on anyone. People get tired of him. Yet Gallup shows his approval rating March 4 was 40%, the first time he rose to 40% or higher since May 2017. He actually trended higher in February. (He was at 36% on January 21, 2018.)

President Trump earned a 93 percent approval rating on Saturday from the largest annual gathering of conservatives...Attendees of the Conservative Political Action Conference voiced their overwhelming support for Trump, who drew a record number of attendees on Friday when he appeared before the conference for the second time since taking office. Link to Washington Examiner story Note-this site has A LOT of popup ads

I don't agree with the politics of the Conservative Political Action Conference but I at least understand their thinking. But Trump? He has enough negatives to kill almost any other politician out there but conservatives love him. I guess Trump was right; he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and it would not cost him any support. But why? He's such an obvious self-promoting con artist, how do they take him seriously?. His business background is horrible, yet they ignore that. Why?

There seems to be a really scary self-destruct element in all of this.

Trump is the middle finger a certain part of our society flips to the world. That's why he gets away with what everyone else doesn't.

Not just " the world " but specifically to their fellow citizens of a more liberal disposition.

Over the last year, I have come to appreciate how many Trumpsters support him simply because his words and deeds " make liberals' heads explode " (to quote a Trump supporter I know). These people make no attempt to- nor feel the need to- rationalize or justify Trumps' behavior, they just enjoy the feeling of "winning" that comes from making liberals mad.

Ours have always been indoor cats.

In their youth they would often make a dash for the outdoors. The first time the (slightly) older one was successful, I figured she wouldn't go too far, and just left the door open.

I was right. Something less than five minutes later I saw her prancing back past the sliding door onto our porch ... with a bird in her mouth.

It ended okay. I managed to get her to surrender the bird, which promptly flew off. But for a cat that had never gone outdoors on her own before, she certainly proved to be a mighty hunter of birds.

Giving the finger to anyone who isn't a God loving white conservative.

You know, this stereotype:

Exactly, as to killing birds, compared to cats + buildings combined, wind turbines kill waay less of them: Wind turbines kill minimally an order of magnitude less of birds than free-ranging domestic cats and building strikes combined.
