Boris Johnson attacks Labour in row over Donald Trump's cancelled visit
https://www.theguardian.com/politic...acks-labour-in-row-over-cancelled-trump-visit

The president’s complaints about the new embassy building were contradicted by the US ambassador to the UK, Woody Johnson, who was appointed by Trump.

Writing in London’s Evening Standard newspaper, Johnson said the move from central London to Nine Elms, next to Battersea, was forced by security concerns after 11 September. The new building was the most advanced US embassy in the world and “did not cost the US taxpayer a cent”, he said, being financed by the sale of the old site and other London properties.

From another Johnson :

Downing Street has accused Jeremy Corbyn and Sadiq Khan of jeopardising relations with America for telling Donald Trump he is not welcome in Britain, after the US president called off a planned visit to London in the face of likely mass protests.

In a move that reinforces Theresa May’s determination to remain publicly close to Trump, despite accusations of racism and his liaisons with the far right, Downing Street backed an accusation from the foreign secretary, Boris Johnson, that Labour was risking transatlantic ties.
Apparently acknowledging that Trump is capable of taking what he regards as a personal slight as reason to alter the US's internation relations. Something Theresa May signally refrained from after Trump's contemptuous tweet at her for mildly regretting his re-tweeting of British Nazis.

What strikes, from a British standpoint, is that the Tories still seem to think that snuggling close to Trump will work for them with the British public. They are living in a fantasy world.

Our Nine Elms US embassy is the most advanced we’ve ever built

I agree with President Trump that Grosvenor Square, in the heart of London, was a perfect location for our embassy. Security concerns after September 11 meant we had to move to a location that could better protect American citizens and our British neighbours. On Tuesday we will open the doors of our brand-new embassy to the general public in Nine Elms, a site selected under a previous administration.

Designed by Philadelphia architects KieranTimberlake, the new embassy is not just bigger, it is better and capable of meeting the complex challenges of the 21st century and beyond. It is the most secure, hi-tech and environmentally friendly embassy that the United States has ever built. Purchased and built from the sale of our London properties, the new embassy did not cost the US taxpayer a cent. Yet is one of the most advanced embassies we have ever built.

That’s not an accident. The United States is re-investing in the Special Relationship. President Trump has told me he views the UK as one of the closest friends and partners of the American people we serve. Our new embassy reflects not just America’s special history with the UK but the special future ahead of us as we advance the prosperity and security of both our nations.
Very diplomatic. "President Trump has told me ...", isn't that sweet? As if Johnson was naive enough to put any store by what Trump says to anybody about anything. Ever.

So, to be clear, as Kay Burley says:

1. It was Bush who did the relocation deal, not Obama
2. Central London site owned by Duke of Westminster not US
3. South London is not a ********

Nine Elms, the new location, certainly used to be a s/h, back in my youth. These days it's prime. Pretty similar to how my place of birth, London's docklands, was a dump back then whereas now it's, well, "Docklands"

The US embassy has purportedly issued a statement re the new embassy

I couldn't find the source but, if genuine, it appears to refute most of what Trump said.

Yeah, but that is obvious, because Trump just made all that crap up.

The biggest problem here is actually treating that ******** claim as serious.

It only deserves to be laughed out of the room. The response is not, "What President Trump has said is not consistent with the facts." It is, "He's a *********** moron."

It's not Trump, it's the office of US president. Big difference. We can't rescind relations with a country on the basis that its president is a twat, then become best friends when a new president is elected. Some maturity and forward thinking is required. Johnson is quite right and Khan is parochial, whiny little dick. Trump behaves like a baby, we all know that, but that's no reason for the UK to follow suit.

Khan is quite right. Why should he kowtow to either May, Johnson or Trump?

Trump sin't wanted and would face huge demonstrations if he came to London.

He will get it big time after his latest stunt.

I think Khan is right, he knows pretty much everyone in London hates Donald Trump and there would be massive demonstrations with all the security headaches attached if Trump visited. Its better that he stays away.

Seems to be leaking out in a few programs with the s-word making it past the self or broadcast censors. Axelrod used the actual word just now on CNN.

Note to forum management: the autocensor is making it hard to discuss this subject and to know what is acceptable to get around the autocensor and still be acceptable.
Last night Anderson Cooper tore a new ******** into the Very Stable Genius, in a way that I haven't heard from a top tier anchor. He said ******** so many times that it sounded like the South Park episode when they tallied swear words. It was awesome.

Well, Trump did call Haiti a ****-hole so we should all cram the streets in protest. He's a far more degenerate individual than the exemplary dignitaries we have welcomed in the past without any hint of public uprising, such as King Abdullah, Robert Mugabe, Emperor Akihito, Xi Jinping and Nicolae Ceaușescu, none of whom referred to Haiti as a **** hole and who merely indulged in a bit of mass murder, ethnic cleansing, slavery, torture, embezzlement, corruption and a whole host of human rights abuses.

London is not the UK, it is a tiny part of it and increasingly does not represent the views of the majority. Khan, and indeed most politicians, would do well to realise this.

London isn't the only part of the UK where Trump is widely hated.

...

Trump is leaving some event with reporters in the room shouting, "Are you a racist?" He ignores the shouts and makes a point of talking to and shaking hands with the one darkest black guy in the room he passes.
Ftf me.

I had only caught the end of that. :o Now I see it was an MLK event, Trump signing some meaningless proclamation. The room was full of blacks. They completely ignored the press yelling out to Trump over and over, "Are you a racist?"

Later MLK's nephew who had been there gave a ridiculous excuse, Trump isn't racist, he's poorly informed.

Unfortunately CNN leaves the end of the meeting out of that video clip.

Give him his due, before Donald Trump, you couldn’t even say ‘Merry Christmas’. Now you can say ‘********’ on the news!

I think ******** should be taken off the autocensor as well. After all it's a Presidential word.

Khan didn't say Trump wasn't welcome in the UK, he said he wasn't welcome in London. Seems that there's nothing in his statement that indicates he's unaware that London isn't the entirety of the UK.

Maybe so but it doesn't even matter. I dislike Trump intensely, mainly because he's a shallow, vacant moron, but I wouldn't presume that my personal tastes should have any impact on the relationship between the UK and the US. Since when has international relations been dictated by the mob, and a self-serving, virtue-signalling mob at that?
