Who will win the Alabama Senate special election?

Who will win the senate seat

  • Total voters
    88
  • Poll closed .
They should get more than a thank you. People are not born with innate knowledge on being a decent human being. Reinforcement of the behavior would require providing a reward or removing a negative stimulus.

No, people shouldn't be thanked for not doing something reprehensible.

Removal of a negative stimulus? Does Roy Moore count?

And Democrats have won a lot more than the republican switchers marginal win. It is the time for charity. Share the bounty.

What do you suggest?

And do you think your suggestion of appeasement is a politically sound one, given the unlikeliness of another Democrat ever holding this office, and the Republican strategy of obstructing the Democrats wherever they can?

The thank you is a good Senator for Alabama who makes the state proud by standing up against that abominable disgrace with slurry speech.

I'm indifferent to political soundness.i don't care, so I can't answer the question.

I would start by having senate Democrats getting McConnell and Elaine Chao a couple's spa day in DC.

People know their best interests.

A fundamental tenet of the liberal political philosophy is that people have a right to decide for themselves what's in their own best interests. Whether they are right or wrong is a different matter. Sending Moore to Washington to support the Republicans' payoffs to the donor class and destroy the social safety net to pay for it is not in the best interests of most Alabamians.

That is very selfish gift giving and I'm glad I'm not related to you during the holiday season.

It absolutely is for the ones who voted for him

Republicans are certainly hard at work on their political calculators this morning. Most Trump supporters probably don't realize how fast this nihilistic, power-obsessed Republican Congress could turn on Trump as soon as they see him as a liability instead of an asset.

I believe that this will be one of the most important repercussions of the Alabama election. Surely the Republican leadership despises Trump (virtually all of them having been the target of withering, insulting, demeaning public attacks by him). A large percentage of the policies he advocates are opposite those typically promoted by Republicans. For now the Republican leadership is hesitate to go after Trump because the Republicans believe that they need his core of fanatical supporters. But as soon the Republican leadership becomes convinced that Trump's power among the electorate is slipping the knives will come out, political blood will run across the floor of the Congress, and there will be nothing left of Trump but a small greasy orange smudge.

Trump back on Twitter this morning: "The reason I originally endorsed Luther Strange (and his numbers went up mightily), is that I said Roy Moore will not be able to win the General Election. I was right! Roy worked hard but the deck was stacked against him!"

America's Smallest President.

He's not wrong. Other than about his endorsement of Strange causing his numbers to go up mightily, which is a typical Trump boast/lie. Strange would have won handily.

Let's also not forget that the R's didn't have to have this election.* Strange could have stayed in office for another year had the special election not been called. The previous governor wasn't going to call one, but got replaced in (of course) a scandal.

*Best I recall. Can't find a cite right now.

It's a gift Alabama's voters made themselves. Exactly as every other state voting every other Senator to the Senate. Call it selfish, but that's how Democracy works in the USA: simple pluralities of voters make gifts to themselves.

I don't remember you asked for thankyou gifts from Democrata when the handed the Presidencx to the abominable one.

ETA: Yeah, bobbed, I know -.-

Absolutely? I rather doubt it. It's not at all uncommon for people to vote against their best interests, or at least some of them. I certainly do. As a well off white middle class retired person living on investments, my immediate interests are usually served by the money grubbing bigoted conservatives whom I hate. Of course if one thinks abstractly about long term interests - like a decent society with values that one finds agreeable - the picture changes, but there's no doubt that on one level, the laissez-faire screw-the-poor trumpies play right into my pocket. Tax cuts? Sure, bring them on. Make me richer. I'll be dead before the poor rise up and cut the throats of greedy bastards like myself. And yet I vote against them every time. And the poor working man votes for trickle down economics even though the only thing that reaches them smells suspiciously of urine.

Some statistics Mrs Don was looking at regarding this election were stark:

Among whites, Moore won 70/30, among blacks he lost 98/2.

Moore also lost among women and young people.

IMO the messages are clear:

  • Old white men are happy for a racist, Christian dominionist, misogynist, child molester to represent them
  • The GOP needs to ensure that as few blacks, young people and women vote as possible in the next election either by getting them off the rolls or persuading (or "persuading") them not to vote
  • This result is an aberration, expect service as usual to resume next time around
I came to this thread for the express purpose of seeing some words of optimism from you, Mr. Know-it-All. And I get this?

(Not an insult; quite the opposite. An acknowledgement of your prescience.)

Wealth interests are not the only interests a person has. For example, charity is in your self interest if it makes you feel good.
