Cont: The Trump Presidency Part III

I want our military to have such an enormous advantage over any other such that other countries won't even bother to think about competing with us, let alone compete with us. Unfortunately, Obama didn't understand that important strategic principle, and now we have more of an arms race against China, and perhaps Russia, Iran, and North Korea, than would have been necessary.

Even now, in confronting North Korea, Trump has had to recall reserve pilots in order to provide the show of military force necessary to drain North Korea's resources (by keeping its military on constant alert) and frighten it into compliance.

Also, the US military has traditionally sought a the capability to fight two wars on opposite sides of the globe at the same time. We do not currently have that capability, so that if we do get into a major conflict somewhere, our enemies elsewhere will be able to take advantage.
Hijackers with boxcutters. Russians with Facebook accounts. Presidents with pathological neediness all too eager to divulge intelligence to visiting adversaries.

It redirects government interference in the economy from areas in which it has no legitimate business to one of the few areas of the economy in which it does have legitimate business (i.e. providing for the national defense).

What part of "fiscally conservative" is a massive increase in the deficit?

ETA: No fair citing off-budget spending.

I'm truly surprised you'd make such an asinine statement. Do you think those countries reduced their military spending during the Obama years?

We're far more likely to have serious problems due to internal matters than to an invasion from a foreign power. All wars (read, regional conflicts) from now on will largely be fought on cyberspace. We've already lost the first major battle in that action and conservatives, to a politician, refuse to even acknowledge the problem much less do anything about it. Global Warming, redux.

The one about Obama has already been torn to shreds

Which just shows trump was never a very good con man. He has always been telling these weird lies.

On this we agree. I don’t think his supporters can be assumed to be stupid or gullible or evil.

I don't know, they all seem to have at least one thing they are shocked that he actually meant seriously and not as some rhetorical device. Like actually building the wall.

Listening to NPR, "they" were talking about something called the "Golden Hour".

That if troops go out into the field for whatever, said troops should be no more than an hour away from pick-up by helicopter (or possibly an Osprey)

From: https://protonex.com/blog/the-need-to-extend-the-golden-hour/

If Republicans want to investigate one of their own, the Golden Hour violation might be the place to start.

But we have Mattis now and he is someone well experienced at leaving army special forces hanging in regards to helicopter extraction. So they are just following his lead.

How very "Old Presidential" of you :D. Modern Presidential means you just keep repeating the same lies over and over again until enough people believe it to be the truth. As this article from last year shows, 72% of Republicans believed that there were issues over President Obama's citizenship despite the complete lack of evidence.

Seventy-two percent of registered Republican voters still doubt President Obama’s citizenship, according to a recent NBC News|SurveyMonkey poll conducted in late June and early July of more than 1,700 registered voters. And this skepticism even exists among Republicans high in political knowledge

Wow. It's hard to know what's really up with that. Conceivably it's pork for double-dipping military retirees. Whose air force are we trying to counter? Are we talking bombers, fighters, what? How does that fit in with the rise of drone warfare?

Do we need them to train new pilots? Conduct reconnaissance? Run bombing missions? Engage in dogfights?

It's an interesting bit of news. I'd be interested in what former combat pilots think of it, and finding out who pushed for it etc.

Or is it just one more meaningless PR stunt?

It is for combat operations in Korea.

Nineteen days after her husband’s death and two days after his wrenching burial, the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson said she has “nothing to say” to President Trump, whose condolence call pulled the grieving widow into the center of a national controversy.

“Very upset and hurt; it made me cry even worse,” Myeshia Johnson told “Good Morning America” about her conversation with the president.

Making her first public comments since she took the call from Trump last week — on the same day her husband’s remains were flown back to the United States — Johnson recalled that the president said her husband “knew what he signed up for, but it hurts anyways. And it made me cry. I was very angry at the tone of his voice, and how he said it.”

She added: “I didn’t say anything. I just listened.”

Trump on Monday characterized his conversation with Johnson as “very respectful.”

...

Trump vehemently denied Wilson’s account, stating without evidence that he had proof it was “totally fabricated.” But White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly later appeared to confirm Wilson’s account. Myeshia Johnson said Monday that Wilson’s version of events was “100 percent correct.”

Johnson said several people — including her aunt and uncle, an Army official and Wilson — heard the conversation because Trump was placed on speaker phone.

“Why would we fabricate something like that?” she said.

Oh look Trump was really a big fat lying piece of **** and Kelly was aiding and abetting this vile fiend.

Remember: there are people here, of all places, that don't assume the worst of Trump or his underlings such as Kelly and even are willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. What a bunch of chumps. Do they ever get tired of being wrong?

What with tucking their tails and running in panic -- tongue-lolling, trouser-dropping panic! -- from any facts that might disturb their masters' feeding at the trough, please don't ask any GOP voters to be logical, responsible, sober, or adult. Gosh, don't be so demanding!

President Trump is still claiming that his call was respectful.

This is at odds with Myeshia Johnson's account.

Myeshia Johnson, widow of Sgt La David Johnson, told ABC News the president's "stumbling" had "hurt her the most".

"..If my husband is out here fighting for our country and he risks his life for our country, why can't you remember his name?" she added.

Of course President Trump will keep pushing his version of events until it's the accepted narrative - regardless of whether it's true or not....

President Trump is still claiming that his call was respectful.

I will give him this, it is one of the more respectful messages coming from trump to people who are grieving.

See his public letter to John Travolta and Kelly Preston on the death of their son.

And communication with the grieving where he is not bragging about his sexual prowess more than expressing emotions for their loss can be chalked up as a win for Trumps comforting grieving families.

I find it troubling that neither Chuck Schumer nor Lindsey Graham even knew that we had 1,000 troops in Niger.

Where else might we have troops in harm’s way that they - and we - don’t know about?

The founders warned of “foreign entanglements”. Looks like that’s being effectively ignored.

You Americans really need to get your act together on Climate Change. Remove the orange menace and all his underlings, or we're all ******. It's not even a partisan question anymore. It's life or death.

Or Wilson and Johnson are lying.

One thing I really dislike about that format is that there is no context. "2 hours ago" has no meaning a week later if it's not dated.
