Wow. It's hard to know what's really up with that. Conceivably it's pork for double-dipping military retirees. Whose air force are we trying to counter? Are we talking bombers, fighters, what? How does that fit in with the rise of drone warfare?

Do we need them to train new pilots? Conduct reconnaissance? Run bombing missions? Engage in dogfights?

It's an interesting bit of news. I'd be interested in what former combat pilots think of it, and finding out who pushed for it etc.

Or is it just one more meaningless PR stunt?

Diplomatic sources suggested to The Times on Thursday that the trip could involve a short audience with the Queen to ‘mollify’ the President, but without the full trappings of a ceremonial visit.

Does she play golf?

She could probably spot him a dozen strokes or so, so he doesn't get embarrassed.

Or just let him cheat like he usually does.

Not really.

There are decent, thoughtful conservatives. There are rather louder, less thoughtful conservatives. The same applies to liberals.

At this moment, the less thoughtful "conservatives" seem to be on the ascendancy and on the liberal side, it's less obvious that the loud know-nothings are in charge. But no one should think that neither tide can shift.

There is a critical difference.

Failure to check that one box would not make someone a DINO in the eyes of most Democrats, and wouldn't even make a scratch in a primary campaign.

Failure to check almost any one of the appropriate boxes tends to brand someone a RINO in the eyes of most conservatives these days, and would be crippling in a primary campaign.

He ran on a agenda of "draining the swamp", doing everything differently, making America great again. He portrayed just about every single president in the last century as acting against Americas interest, if not outright being traitors.

That's not a conservative agenda it's a radical populist demagogue agenda.

Political definitions are tricky, with words having multiple meanings, or altering over time. While the term 'conservative' could mean "keeping things the same", I think its a perfectly reasonable to assume "conservative" also means "against taxes/fiscal regulations, in favor of stronger social regulations (e.g. anti-abortion/anti-drug/pro-religion). When that particular definition is used, Trump matches the definition quite well.

As for his agenda of "draining the swamp", I don't really consider that to be a conservative OR liberal ideal.... just a catch-phrase. (I don't think any politician will admit to wanting 'bad' people in government, regardless of their political beliefs.)

As a Brit, I can promise you that if that man sets foot in the UK I will take time of work to protest him, as will many, many others.

I suspect, he won’t even make a public appearance.

If the Queen, gawd bless 'er, does feel it her duty to meet this appalling person it'll be in some god-forsaken spot in the Scottish Highlands, mark my words. That's her turf : she could just shoot the mofo on the spot and nobody would bat an eyelid.

As long as that remains the case, then yes, it would be a false equivalency. But that can change, and it behooves us progressives and liberals to acknowledge that tendency in some conversations. That faction (the progressives that tend to do that) might have been a major factor in Trump being elected after all.
