• Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.

Morphing shape over England - multiple videos

The other thing is murmurations are a winter phenomenon. This time of year starllings are still keeping a low profile while recovering from the exertions of breeding. The don't start getting into flocks till Sep/Oct.

I vote fake. Too many videos with the same angle, same sequence but from different locations. If that were birds we should be seeing different shapes, different sequences, morphing into additional shapes at some point.

It's fake.

I vote that somebody took a video of starling doing their thing , then pasted part of it in other video ;).

Half fake.

ETA: By the way was one of you in the middle of such a flock ? I dunno if it was starling or not, but we were plowing stuff in a field when a gigantic flock fell on us. Shade of "the birds" it scarred me.

Yeah, I vote fake too, for all the reasons other people mentioned. Starlings aren't murmurating yet. The 'flock' stays in a perfectly contained geometric area, whereas you'd see the general shape of the swarm change or at least fluctuate over time. The shape is the same from all angles, which would indicate a perfectly balloon shaped flock that does not break formation when changing altitude. The scale looks different from video to video. The patterns appear the same in every video, as though everyone started recording at the same time. That is both impossible from multiple angles simultaneously, and a clear hint that multiple videos have chroma keyed in the same piece of stock video.

Which could be a video of actual starlings overlayed with a mask to keep the shape consistent, a particle effect or a lot of other things.

Somewhat similar to the starlings, I was once lucky enough to see a swarm of monarch butterflies migrating.

I was standing on the side of the highway in late afternoon, and a thundershower had just gone by, leaving the air and sky with that glorious, fresh-scrubbed look that you sometimes get after them.

They went right over my head, a few hundred feet up, I guess, and slowly moved off into the distance as the sun was going down

It didn't look like the starlings. What was almost magical about it was they all were flying in entirely different directions, and yet the cloud of them was moving together as a whole in the same direction.

One of those memories that stays with you, and yet is so hard to describe.

I hadn't watched the whole clip in the opening post, it is definitely the same video of birds (or a simulation of such behaviour) pasted into different videos.

Birds or no birds, CGI murmuration is apparently pretty straightforward as digital special effects go.

Here is an example, created by DDB NZ, used by NZ Sky TV a year or two back to promote the introduction of their "Sky On Demand" service, and set to the awesome piece "Outro" by M83

I suggest full screen to get the best effect

I love that.

Nothing spells legit like the intro with the alien head, as well as the one in the lower left corner.

I could recreate that effect easily enough. I'll guess it is starlings though because why would anybody dream up something that stupid looking all on their own? A flying morphing guitar pick?!

Everyone has a camera and computer now and we get idiotic stuff like this? You'd think they could at least CG something cool and alienish! Very disappointed with the fraudsters these days. At least the crop circle people get out of the house sometimes!
