This thread reminds me of a now late acquaintance, a neighbor of one of my friends. He was, among other things, one of the most generous people you'll ever meet, living in near poverty while adopting disadvantaged kids, giving his stuff away, generous to a fault to a wife who stole and cheated - in short a real gentleman. He would work his butt off to help a neighbor. Except that he was also a gun toting libertarian, a lifelong alcoholic, and a raging homophobe and bigot given to long, loudmouthed, obscene monologues and rants. That he was, in some areas, a fine and good person does not mean he was not also an awful, disgusting jerk in others.
He sold and gave away nearly everything, in part to keep his embezzling wife out of jail, and died in a dingy old travel trailer on borrowed land, drunk and alone.
