Successful GOP candidates didn't need to be smart, they just needed to have something about them. Unsuccessful GOP candidates (Bush senior, Dole, McCain, Romney) seemed to be smart.

Successful Democratic candidates need to be charismatic but being smart is not a disqualifying characteristic. Unsuccessful candidates (Mondale, Dukakis, Gore, Kerry, Hillary) may be smart but they're a bit boring or unengaging.

(nitpick) Bush Sr. was reasonably successful as a GOP candidate, having won a presidential election and all. :)

Why? This is basic trump behavior. The obstruction of justice stuff seems far more likely to be the end of him. This can't honestly shock anyone.

This is what the republican party chose to best represent the nation and we should accept that this is their view of presidential behavior.

Then nothing will - the GOP don't mind, heck his base love it - and the only people who get annoyed about this kind of thing already find President Trump repugnant.

But that was just an underlying premise building towards your conclusion that the sugar industry will continue getting away with it.

You've been countered with evidence that forces aside from consumer awareness challenge your conclusion, but respond by defending the underlying premise.

There isn't disagreement that consumers are unaware, but that their occasional purchase of a bag of sugar has far less overall impact on volume consumed than big food and beverage companies changing an ingredient at a few dozen mg per serving over a few million (billion?) servings.

Unless the consumers are aware, it's just one industry against another. There's no ground swell of opposition from the populace and there's not going to be any.

It's soda lobbyists against sugar lobbyists. The end result of who wins has a negligible effect on the end consumer. It appears big sugar has the upper hand and they will continue to do so with the fact that the cost to the end consumer is pennies per year, the soda industry may complain but they don't seem to be hurting and it keeps people in the US sugar industry employed.

Don't get me wrong, I think protections for the sugar industry should be done away with, but I don't think they will be.

Maybe if it was explained to all those consumers (many of whom are Republicans, presumably) that they are paying what amounts to an additional sugar tax on every product they buy which contains sugar (Which is a lot of products, not everything can substitute corn syrup.) they would feel differently about it.

Trump is a juvenile idiot. It was a sad day for America when he took over the presidency and I expect things to get worse for America in the coming months and years, but despite the damage that Trump has inflicted upon the United States, this country will eventually recover after he leaves office.
