President Donald Trump has removed his senior strategist Steve Bannon from the US National Security Council (NSC).
The appointment in January raised fears that the gathering of US intelligence chiefs could become politicised.
A White House aide told US media the reshuffle was not a demotion for Mr Bannon.

(my bold) Really?
So what's behind this? Is Bannon on his way out?

Trump likes to pit his people against each other. It looks like McMaster insisted on having wide administrative latitude over the NSC as a condition of taking the job. I would expect that he might have forced the issue.

Interesting....

Maybe this is so he can focus on other things.

edited to add....

as the newsflash says, he was apparently only there to keep an eye on Flynn so his presence there is no longer needed.

He can now concentrate on ensuring that Trump's key policy initiatives make it through congress.

Apparently Bannon was only there to keep an eye on Flynn and now McMaster is there he's not needed on the NSC -

Bloomerg Politics

A White House official said that Bannon was placed on the committee in part to monitor Trump’s first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, and never attended a meeting. He’s no longer needed with McMaster in charge of the council, the official said.

Perhaps a new security screenings turned up something that disqualifies him.

Why would he need to be there to monitor Flynn? Why appoint Flynn if he requires direct supervision from Bannon?

At the very least they should make Bannon pay to replace the seat he lost. Carelessness has consequences.

If Flynn needed a babysitter, why was he appointed at?
- all?

- that's what I'd like to know - think anyone will ask that question at the next WH press conference?

Nothing happening recently has changed my original opinion that the current administration are dangerously incompetent.
This NSC change should be for the good, I suppose, with the previously excluded professionals back in the room.

Not sure the bolded isn't a convenient excuse, making the team look wise in the rear view mirror. I think this is definitely a demotion for a puppet master. I chalk it up to slowly rising realization by Trump of what is coming down the road in terms of the Congressional investigations and some house cleaning in response. I am of many minds as to the purpose of Comey's WH visit a week or so back in that respect.

Oh,they will put a good face on it but it has got to be a big blow to the ego for Bannon.

There is already a thread on this.

Given that Bannon is widely disliked by GOP congress critters,it would be a very stupid choice for the job.

After Syria used chemical weapons, Bannon probably decided he didn't want anything to do with the nsc.
