Vanessa Bayer teaches a master class on the humor of playing it straight. For the record, Lorne Michaels called this the funniest thing he'd ever seen.

The last time Lorne Michaels showed good comedic judgement was when he signed the Kids in the Hall. He's been coasting ever since. It's pure luck that SNL has enough good years to carry him. Kudos to the cast and the writers.

Did you even watch the video I linked? It really doesn't seem like you did. For that matter, it doesn't seem like anybody here has. The contributions to the thread consist of mostly non sequiturs. My point is that SNL is supposed to be a comedy show, but it managed only to be unintentionally funny by doing an obsequious tribute to our outgoing President. The show is Democratic propaganda masquerading as comedy. Sort of like The Daily Show, or Stephen Colbert's abomination.

It was meant to be funny, and almost exactly in the way you took it.

ETA: But I will also agree with FMW. The bit was flat and stupid. So, it was meant to be funny, but it mostly failed. It failed badly enough that you didn't even think it was meant to be funny.

SNL has always had the odd moment of sincerity or seriousness. Sometimes, there is no bit.

Truly one of the funniest things I've ever seen on Saturday Night Live. It had me laughing until I retched. Or maybe it was retching until I laughed.

Of course that wasn't the only funny thing that happened yesterday. The million sore loser march was pretty funny too.

It would have been funnier if Obama was wearing a pussy hat -- but then, that would just be redundant.

I mean, sunmaster gave away the game within the first post. The reason he objects isn't really "It's a comedy show! There's no place for non-comedy!", but that someone would express genuine affection and appreciation for the man at a moment when it seems understandable to do so. This isn't so much an overreaction as calculated malevolence. ABBAB.

Oh, yeah, I lied. What is it with liberals and malicious attacks? My so-called lie was a joke, one that had a point, which was "how the hell do I know that Loss Leader is the guy who wrote the stuff you linked to?" From my point of view, you're anonymous. I can only accept that the posts here under your name were written by you.

As for some of my funny stuff, take a look at the FMF thread I started on Godwin's Law. I was having a lot of fun with that one.

Also, I thought up a good line when Black Lives Matters people were interrupting people's brunches at restaurants in Manhattan. I never got a chance to use it, however. I thought the BLM motto should have been "No justice, no quiche!"

Gave away the game? I thought I was being quite open about the game. It's that the liberal media, which includes most of the entertainment industry, saw Obama as some sort of messiah. I've never been terribly fond of religion, but progressives tend to substitute for it my worshiping certain politicians and policies. Sad.

I completely disagree that it was an attempt to be funny. I have no doubt in fact that it was 100% heartfelt and sincere. Which is both sad and funny in a way.

I realize certain right-wing talk-show hosts liked to make jokes about Obama being "the messiah" and "the anointed one" back in the 2008 and 2012 election campaigns, and that certain of their listeners were gullible enough to believe this was something Obama's supporters were calling him, but I thought even most right-wingers had realized by now this was an attempt at humor by the various Limbaugh-types who were repeating it.

We had a couple of threads related to this back in 2011. One of them, which I started, was intended as an examination of the claim that liberals were constantly telling us that Barack Obama is the smartest president ever, which conservative poster BeAChooser had made. BeAChooser was able to provide examples of right-wing media making the claim that liberals were always saying this but was not able to provide actual examples of liberals saying this.

In writing the OP for that thread I made a reference to the messiah claim as well:

Going by past performance, I am guessing that BAC has not really heard people calling Barack Obama the smartest guy ever to sit in the Oval Office. I suspect what he has actually heard is people claiming that people are calling Barack Obama the smartest guy to ever sit in the Oval Office.

In the past, various right-wing humorists have referred to Barack Obama as "the Messiah" and "The Anointed One" -- part of a running gag in which they pretend that people on the left actually look upon and refer to Obama that way. A number of their listeners have actually fallen for the joke. My guess is that this is something similar.

So the second question I hope this thread can address is: where does the idea that people have been calling Barack Obama 'the smartest guy to ever sit in the Oval Office' actually come from? Are there really a significant number of people out there who are saying Barack Obama is our smartest president ever -- or is it instead that there are some people out there who are claiming this is being said a lot, and other people listening to them who are too gullible to bother checking the claim out?

One of the posters in that thread wanted to discuss the messiah claim, so I spun that off into a thread of its own ("Who calls Barack Obama the messiah -- and why?") so we could examine that claim as well.

In that thread I presented evidence in support of my claim that "people such as Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity routinely refer to Barack Obama as 'The Messiah', 'The Anointed One', and 'The One' -- not because they actually believe that Barack Obama is the Messiah but in an attempt to mock Barack Obama and his followers", and I invited anyone who could to provide evidence in support of the echo chamber claim that Barack Obama's supporters frequently refer to him as the Messiah. No one was able to provide any substantive evidence in support of the latter claim.

I've bumped that thread for your benefit, so that you can present evidence now to support the claim if you seriously believe it's true. (Or, if posting in a 6-year-old thread doesn't appeal to you, we can start a brand-new thread to discuss it.)
