President Trump

From Fox News via Apple News:

"President Trump on Friday was forced to hand over his beloved Android cellphone in favor of a new encrypted phone he will use during his term in office, The New York Times reported.

The Times called Trump's Android his "Linus blanket" that held hundreds of contacts. The report said that security officials have also asked Trump to stop using the Twitter handle @RealDonaldTrump and to use @POTUS.

How will the National Day of Patriotism be celebrated?
Some kind of big parade, lit by flaming torches maybe?

How about a slogan to go with it?
"One Nation, One Government, One Leader"

That sounds patriotic.

Don't forget the immortal words of the President, they will be remembered and repeated by future generations.

*“I did try and **** her. She was married… I moved on her like a bitch, but I couldn't get there. And she was married. Then all of a sudden I see her, she's not got the big phony tits and everything... I've got to use some Tic Tacs, just in case I start kissing her. You know I'm automatically attracted to beautiful. I just start kissing them. It's like a magnet. Just kiss. I don't even wait. And when you're a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything.”

Donald Trump, 45th President of the USA

And who said it's restricted to gifts?

You. Or, more accurately, the Harvard professor you quoted:

” He adds: “It’s pretty clear that the clause was intended to stop foreign governments from currying favor with federal officials through gifts.”
(Quote above was cited in linked post.)

Obviously, conducting business while in office creates the possibility of conflict of interest, and Trump is just begging for investigations and allegations if he doesn't completely divest himself, or at the very least, put an extreme distance between himself and his business.

And come to think of it, it's already too late for him to do that. Imagine if he sold his billion dollar businesses now. There would be a demand for an investigation to determine if he used his office to help ensure a good price.

In terms of public perception, he's already screwed. It terms of actual ethics violations, I doubt he'll be able to avoid them. It should be interesting. I'm hoping for impeachment and conviction by 2020, but that might be optimistic.

However, the point I was getting at with my earlier comment remains an issue. Can a successful businessperson become President of the United States, at least without taking a gigantic financial loss? Likewise with cabinet secretaries. Do we want to restrict those high offices to people who have never held a real job? Or at least, who have been out of the business world for a long time so there would be no loss associated with suddenly handing over their assets at auction?

To put it differently, let's pretend that Donald Trump were an ethical, honest, person. I know, that's hard, but it's a hypothetical. Errr....maybe a different example. Let's suppose a genuine, honest, decent, billionaire (they exist) decided to run for President. And this billionaire was still actively in control of one or more of the enterprises that made him rich. He doesn't divest during the campaign, because he's not confident of winning. Now, he wins and he has to take a really large financial loss if he wants to satisfy the critics, and even then he probably won't satisfy the critics, because a lot of the criticism is really just an excuse for criticizing his policies anyway.

Well, he is officially lying, but that's nothing new.

As for the latter part, I doubt you would find many constitutional scholars who would agree with you.

It's not at all clear to me who's right and who's wrong on these issues, but Painter (who surely counts as an authority) seems pretty damned convinced.

Of course, if the Republican-led houses don't give a damn, then nothing happens. I'd like to think better of the Republicans, honest I would, but I think that they are currently part of the crowd that doesn't care if Trump shoots a man on Fifth Avenue. They will, I think, wake up and wonder where the heck their party went, because Donald Trump is no principled conservative (in fact, has no principles at all).

National Day of patriotism created. Good grief.

I'm glad to see he's starting out with something really important.

But.....the day of patriotism should be every day! Of course, we can't take every day off work, but perhaps set aside some time every day. How about, "Two minutes of patriotism". I think it has potential.

The answer is you make that sacrifice because a loss of wealth is a meaningless sacrifice compared to the lives men and women have agreed to sacrifice based on your orders.

Interesting that you need this explained to you?

Well, Michael Bloomberg -- 42 billion bucks now -- was New York's mayor for 12 years, and not everybody loved him but nobody accused him of using his job to advance his business. He separated himself from management but mostly kept ownership. Trump is unique in that -- unlike Bloomberg, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg etc. etc. -- he doesn't produce or sell products or services. Trump's primary business consists of selling the use of his name, based on the illusion that he's a bigshot businessman created by "The Apprentice." Just running for office, let alone holding office, promotes his business (which many people think was his primary reason for getting into the race in the first place). At the very least, we are entitled to complete transparency, starting with the release of his tax forms. But he refuses to do that.

Trump's conflicts can't even be counted:

It's not like Trump didn't know how to separate himself from his brand: when it seemed certain he was going to lose and be shamed, he decided to name his newest venture Scion Hotels instead of associating it directly with Trump.
Because his business is so intrinsically linked to his name, this is what he would have to do with his entire empire (plus put it in a real blind trust).

Of course, he won't do that.

Day 2 POTUS Trump, speech to the intel community.

Yet another thin-skinned, comically ego-maniacal, rambling tirade.

I'm shocked!
