Donald can't effectively use the Iraq war against Hillary anymore given that his running mate voted for it. He was asked about this yesterday on 60 Minutes. His response is that he doesn't care because it was so long ago and it is ok for Pence to make a mistake. Hillary though, she isn't allowed to make the same exact mistake (he literally said that).

What a moron.

IIRC he co-sponsored the resolution.

What, Dole's there? He said he was going to sleep in on election day, I figured he wouldn't get up for the con.

No, Dole's been their only big-name draw for quite sometime. He's the only GOP presidential candidate from the last seven to agree to show up. Bush I and II [two each], Romney, McCain... all had to wash the car this week.

Nobody really cares about the running mate's position.

Heck, Ronald Reagan's running mate had called the central plank of Reagan's platform, "voodoo economics", and Reagan still won, and the Republican Party has been running on it ever since, even though Bush was correct.

It isn't so much about Pence but Trump's unbelievable hypocrisy if he continues to attack Hillary on that. Even for a Republican it would display shocking levels of hypocrisy.

I thought Melania gave a great speech it can't have been easy for her.

I also find it interesting that at least a couple of posters felt the need to comment on her as a sex object which is kind of ironic....

I really don't care about her.or his kids. They're not running. That said, do you really expect men not to look at her sexually after she posed nude?

She's a hot looking trophy wife. I hear Trump trades them in every 10 to 15 years.

I hear Trump trades them in every 10 to 15 years.

Having your third wife talk about how loyal you are is a mixed message at best. Again, why no anecdotes about their life together to help humanize the great pumpkin? That was a running theme. Everyone praising Donald but not citing examples or giving anecdotes.

Hypocrisy? The word doesn't even exist anymore. I took a razor blade and cut it out of my Funk & Wagnalls years ago. There are no shocking levels of hypocrisy for Creepublicans.

If you want to play a fun game, listen to Joni Ernst's speech from tonight and see how long it takes for the phrase, "a rising star in today's Republican party," to turn into a question.

I only caught glimpses, but I thought the most telling part of the evening is when Trump ended his introduction of Melania by saying "thank you...thank you," as the audience cheered her introduction. It is inconceivable to him that people might applaud for the person being introduced.

Day One is over. As with most national convention kick-off days, it was a nothing. If anything, the Fox coverage shows that giving the keynote slot to Melania was a demand of Trump and that no one supported it other than everyone who knew you had to give the big petulant orange baby what he wants.

Fox isn't even trying to spin her moment as meaningful. They're simply ignoring it. All the Hannity spin is directing back to the theme.... Obama Sucks. Hillary Sucks. Okay, vote for Trump 'cuz you have to.

Hint to speechwriters: They're called anecdotes. "I married him because he's kind; trust me on that" just doesn't cut it. It may be that they are hard-pressed to come up with an actual/verifiable example of Trump actually caring about someone other than himself, but hell, make some up. "I grow up loving fashion and remember how hard coming to America and trying to hook up with rich man and he is a very good man, believe me." ETA: I see Stacko was commenting the same thing while I was typing and watching Giuliani talk to Hannity.

Really? Weepy mom blaming Hillary, personally, for her son's death was worth about two points in the "Undecided" column.... maybe. Mostly, they're just preaching to the choir.

Let's hope they have something more for Days Two Through Four. With no decent floor fights and no one rioting outside they're putting the independent voters to sleep. The "relative of the night" scheduling is going to put a damper on any themes developing because the relatives are kinda sorta expected to support him. What's Ivanka going to offer? Make-up tips?

Can't wait to hear the spin.

I don't know, Melania was the only speaker I was curious about watching. Prime time makes sense to me. Caught the end of Giuliani though, that was intense.

So, day one wrap up: the floor fight this afternoon was worth seeing the instant replay (I missed the original). Melania was the ironic 'legal' immigrant story I expected.

Meh, I honestly don't understand 4 TV channels and PBS radio dedicated to full coverage of a bunch of boring speeches.

That was never in doubt. But on night one of the Obama's a scary Muslim convention, lifting a section of Michelle Obama's speech for Melania is staggeringly poor form.
Most definitely. Donald should fire whoever wrote the speech. But that would require an admission that they lifted parts of Michelle's speech so it will never happen.

There's almost no way that wasn't straight up plagiarism.

My question: did someone do it because they were out of ideas and desperate or was it sabotage?

I doubt Melania wrote it.

Yeah. I'm sure a head's gonna roll, or has already rolled over the plagiarism but I take back what I said about her little moment in the spotlight being a net zero.

It again shows the total incompetence of the campaign and the party. I mean, at least steal from someone speaking in, say, Australia in the seventies. You go back to the speech of the wife of your hated enemy? For crissake. This is amateur night in Dixie stuff.

"Hey, that orange guy is insisting we let his family speak ever night. We could use those slots for arab-bashing, you know."
"Yeah, but what are ya gonna do? He wants mindless drivel from family members. It's all about the brand, ha ha. And the brand is Trump, not Republican."
"Okay, but make sure she doesn't say something stupid. Get that kid McMullen on it. He went to Oklahoma Cipherin' and Spellin' for a couple of semesters. Tell him to write her up something safe and acceptable."
"Hey, McMullen. Write a speech for Melania. Stick with something tried and true, okay."
