The existence of God and the efficacy of prayer

Oh, I don't know. 100 or so years ago most physicists thought the universe had existed for ever. Only the Bible said it had a beginning. So science in that respect has moved closer to the Bible. In fact, if you look at the actions of God in Genesis 1 and order of creation, ending with man on the sixth day, its not too far from what modern earth science and evolutionary theory are now saying. Yes, it didn't happen in six literal days, but the Hebrew word Yom as well as meaning 'day', also means an unspecified period of time. If you don't take it too literally, it doesn't do badly at all for a creation myth,

Since thousands of Christians insist that evolution is incompatible with the Bible, I can sense a no-true-Scotsman/Christian defense coming soon.

But as far as Genesis, flowering plants weren't the first living things on earth, nor did they develop before the existence of the sun, moon and stars. Birds didn't develop at the same time as aquatic creatures. People developed last, but not from dust.

For Christians are all out on that right wing?

Plenty of Christians on the left, I'm talking more about this place specifically. Being a skeptical place with lots of deep personal issues, it makes sense that it would be so dark and hostile to prayer or God.

Why do you fear reality so much?

Yup! Only the Bible! There are no other creation myths whatsoever! Not a single one!

Most atheists will not concede that there may be an Ultimate Intelligence behind the existence (and design) of the Universe. Many will not concede that no-one knows.
On the contrary, most atheists will self-identify as agnostic atheists, and will point out that though no-one can prove the existence or non-existence of a god, such a being is logically inconsistent in its standard presentation, its hypothesised presence is inconsistent with the observed universe, and even if it did exist would be such an evil being that its "worship" would be a moral outrage.

Well there's that love that we know god engenders in all his worshipers.

What's love got to do with it?

The atheist can create an enemy out of Mother Teresa, your whining doesn't work on me.

You guys can create an enemy out of Mother Teresa, your whining doesn't work on me.

I'm certain that there's that bit in the Bible which says Love your enemies and pray for those that persecute you.

Mind you, people have been praying for me for years and I haven't persecuted anyone. It hasn't had much effect either.

Sometimes yes.

Are they praying for you not to persecute others?

So when Jesus said it he meant only sometimes. I didn't read that in Matthew 5.
As I said, I've never persecuted anyone. Actually they've prayed for a lot of things, as have I.

You have posted many manifestly incorrect things. I would be interested in you supporting this one. Where, in your bible, is your Jesus said to be said to have said that you are called to love your enemies, "sometimes"?

Chapter and verse, if you would be so kind.

I have Frankly Mr. Shankly running in mind instead.

I'm impressed to see another who loves the lord and you've done a great job at trying to engage people here. But I'm sure you'll see this quickly, most here will only troll you.

I've enjoyed your responses tremendously, don't give up, you're truly doing the lords work.

Thankyou!

Yes, it can be tricky going in these parts, and some of the locals think that sheer weight of numbers will topple your wagon. But I've long been in the habit of identifying those whose lives are so empty that their only joy is in trolling (poor creatures) and skipping past their posts, so I don't actually read very much of what's on the thread. It makes for much lighter travelling. :D

What strange creatures you both are.

Thankyou!

So you are one of those poor creatures who skip past posts?
