Hillary Clinton is Done

I really can't believe she'd be so stupid, in light of how the Chinese hacked Obama, Palin and McCain's computers and data in 2008. That was a big news story.

It is possible that her having a separate server was not "stupid" and in fact could have been more secure than the government email server she was supposed to be using. I'm not saying it was, but it could have been and she could have thought it was.

It is a matter of security through obscurity. The US government is under continual attack by hackers, every single day. As you note, they occasionally find ways in and there are breaches. Her server was never shown to be subjected to anything more than common spam. So if it was at all well set up, it should have had no problem being an obscure secure server. Possibly more secure than using her government email, or at least she may have felt it just as secure.

So, stupid isn't really the issue. Arrogant may be the issue.

she never used "security" as an excuse, further, no one who ever saw the "can you imagine" video where she is talking about using email would ever believe that she did this for any reason other than a foolhardy attempt to shield her communications from oversight and FOIA.

That makes sense.

If she did something like get NSA verification that her server was as secure as possible, I'm not sure if it would be criminal or not. Probably not in the eyes of whatever judge would look at the case. Interpretation of law can be a fickle thing, and the fact that the FBI hasn't brought charges already implies there are probably complex legalese technicalities at play, to me, at least.

Not withstanding the arrogance thing isnt really that far off either. There are other ways to look at the motivation... of course crime or none... it doesnt make her look good to impose her own methodologies even considering whether or not there was malicious intent

There's a decent chance no one really thought much about the security (well, perhaps other than whomever set the server itself up with whatever local security they may have chosen), less techy people tend not to think about security as much and her age, no insult intended, and career history don't really suggest a particularly great tech knowledge.

As much as I’ve been investigated and all of that, you know, why would I —- I don’t even want -— why would I ever want to do e-mail?" she's seen on tape telling Peter Paul on home video captured at a fundraiser.

"Can you imagine?" she said.

she never used "security" as an excuse,

Agreed. I just got the feeling that Kellyb thought it was stupidly insecure. Hence the stupid remark. She may have had reason to think it was at least as secure as her government email, so that would not be stupid. Or that would not be THE stupid. There are plenty of other reasons it is stupid beyond security, as you point out.

I think she'd at least have a passing knowledge of the fact that China hacked Obama and McCain's emails, etc in 2008. I don't like her as a politician, and I don't consider her terribly competent in the area of geopolitical foresight, but she's not THAT incompetent.

Yeah, I'm not seeing a 15-16 year old quote as relevant to any of this, whatsoever.

Yeah, it wasn't 15 years old when she set up her cowboy server.

But hell, if you think that her experience in being investigated was not relevant to her setting up a private server that she kept in the basement of her house, who am I to judge you.

Can you imagine?

It's not really incompetence (unless she has a side gig in infosec I didn't know about), it's that a lot people just don't really understand security that well, for many a copy of Norton is all they think they'll ever need. She probably paid someone to make it "secure", even if it it could never be as secure as a government server could potentially be.

How do you know she went to personalserver4U.com for a "cowboy server"?

I just don't see it, as much as I'd like to.

There is a whole thread starting here and continued here discussing her emails and email server.

ETA: and the proper nomenclature is "homebrew cowboy server" ;)

She appears to be a lot like my late mother. I had to go program her VCR for her, and when I showed up, it was usually flashing 12:00. She managed to use a blackberry, but you know that wasn't that hard. My mom managed to send emails with the iMac I got her.

And she appears to be a believer in Alien Visitations.

I simply don't think she was technologically savvy enough to criticize what her IT guy was suggesting she do, and probably hoped to keep her political emails hidden from the world with her own server.

The result was that she exposed compartmentalized secrets in a very dangerous fashion, and I am certain the Chinese read them all. (Why so certain? I am a cyber security guy as well as my other qualifications, and have seen how clever some of the Chinese malware is. They are what we refer to as an Advanced Persistent Threat.)

She's like your mother because ... reasons ?

And she so technically st00pid, she figured she could just hide all her email and no one would ever notice ?? That's your theory ?

See the preceding post - there'e a whole thread about her email server where you can impress us all with you cyber security qualifications, and evidence her server or email was compromised.
