South Carolina, tear down that flag!

That distinction merits its own regional banner, in the opinion of many who live there.

I found myself wondering today if someone could find such a banner, but not one that was used in the rebellion. And if they did so, and actually flew that banner, would the people who were outraged about the confederate battle flag be outraged that someone would find a way to show Southern pride without the overt civil war reference.

I am quite surprised to find that this incident looks like it will be the thing that drives out all the confederate banners, whether the battle flag or the Stars and Bars.

Why does there need to be any banner? What is the Banner for New England? For the Midwest? For any other geographic region within the US?

That is a really interesting story. Thanks for telling it.

You actually see the burning cross in some movies on Scotland...the 1954 Disney version of "Rob Roy" for instance, and in a LOT of the movies about Bonnie Prince Charlie and the 45.

No,it won;t drive out the Confederate flags. It will probably end the flying of them from public buildings, but that will be it. Private individuals and groups are still free to display it.

How does eBay stop selling it? I thought eBay was a personal auction site, where individuals sold their wares? I didn't know eBay sold anything itself.

Maybe it's changed since I've used it.

The same way they prevent the sale of human body parts, by voiding any transaction that involves a prohibited item.

Pretty much by design, no one will care because no one even will know what it means. All it will be is some random flag that represents who knows what.

Software cancels any sale that is for confederate flag merchandise.

A: The flag you are displaying makes me think that you are racist.
B: It's not a racist flag. It is showing my pride in my heritage.
A: The heritage of the confederacy is one of the right of some people to own other people. So to those whose ancestors were once owned, or to those whose sympathies are with those people who were owned, it makes you look like a racist.
B: Oh, here we go, the intolerant thought police telling me what I can or can't do.
A: I am not telling you how to think, or what you can or can't do. I am telling you how it makes you look, and why it makes you look that way.
B: Well I am not responsible for what you think of me. In fact I don't care what you think of me.

As I said above, I don't believe this "southern culture" thing really exists. It's certainly not homogeneous. West Virginia is a lot more like western Pennsylvania than it is Cajun Louisiana.

Agreed ^^.

A: OK, so tell me what heritage YOU think it represents and how it does that?
B: Well, southern culture blah blah blah states rights blah blah pride blah blah blah
A: You realize they were fighting to secede from the US and preserve slavery, right?
...

Good point. Here are some more you can "explain" for me.

1.) How does a white guy like me use the "N" word in every day conversations without being thought a racist?

2.) How can I dress like a Nazi without the Nazi associations?

3.) How can I let strangers know that my Swastika regalia is to honor my Buddhist sympathies?

4.) How can I stare at a woman's breasts without her thinking I'm a pervert?

3 is fairly straightforward:

It is probably best if you don't have it angled at 45-degrees, especially not if it is a black Swastika in a white circle on a red background or adding lightning flash decorations to it. Although, if you live in Donacaster, you might try to claim it was all a misunderstanding

(As an aside, this is so much more OTT as a Nazi flag than the usual ones - containing a skull and the SS flashes as well as the Swastika)
“There was no motive behind it. It was purely down to my ignorance as to what it represented then and what it represents now.

“I Googled it and realised I had dropped a massive blunder. I just want to apologise for any upset I have caused.”

Mr Baker, who has three children, has been flying different flags outside his home for nearly a decade and has more than 100 in his collection

However if you have, say a golden swastika symbol at 90 degrees, next to a Bhudda, and maybe some elephants or prayer flags, you might be able to get away with it.

At the least, if one is not racist, then it is rather crass and impolite to fly it when one finds out what the flag's raison d'être was

They thought so, too. That's how they became West Virginia.

Sorry. Sloppy editing on my part. I meant to say all the "official" flags, by which I meant those flown on public buildings.

I suspect that being "crass and impolite" to what they perceive as the power structure is one of the main motivations for which it is flown.

Maybe that's the "southern culture" we hear so much about?

Being an *******.
