The Pope hasn't watched TV since 1990

Who said only source. Now if he had said that he used the internet daily, and chatted on blogs (annonymously) then perhaps he could be better informed on what goes on outside the Vatican, but he didn't say and I doubt he does.

Well, before jumping to conclusions perhaps you should confirm...
ETA: apparently he doesn't. But he does consider the internet "a gift from God"

Why don't you do so today?

I originally got it because it was cheaper for my phone and internet to bundle with the tv...but then they raised my rates higher than they originally told me...so ill cancel as soon as the contract is up so I don't have to argue with them about it.

He just cut the cord early. He's actually hyper-with-it.

What does all his living room furniture point towards?

He does not have a living room. He has an office, bedroom and bathroom. I am not sure what room it is in, but the only real luxury he has is an old piano

I was not aware that he considers the internet a gift from god, which it is not and is a stupid thought.

Of course, if one cares about world events, one can get information from other than TV. TV is simply the representation of all media sources in this context and it is much better than doing intenet searches for past news or analysis sources and it does not mean all the trivial that is also available from all sources, even while the trivia is instructive in defining society (reality).

If he gets information from any source that is not from his "advisers" it would be simple to say so, but there is plenty of good information on TV also if one looks for it, and it tends to be more current.

If I wanted to be mean, I would say he saw more flashes of skimpily dressed women than his concentration could tolerate, given the obscession with sex in the Catholic (and Islamic) world. (I guess that was mean, even though I think he is a good human, just deluded)

Comment to the effect that "I also don't watch TV", are simply trite.

And he is the CEO of this.

By comparison (not ethically or similar) we in Florida have a governor who's salary is $1.

Well he and Benedict have gone a long towards fixing the problems that have been plaguing the Vatican bank for decades. One of the biggest problems in general has been a lack of liquid assets. The Church has a high paper value, but until you realize it can not sell something like the Sistine Chapel, you understand the organization is nowhere near as valuable as some would like to think.

Precisely because he is the CEO of pretty much a bigger mega-corporation than almost any dystopian novel ever imagined, and which has been around for more centuries than ANY corporation ever, I would assume they learned to delegate by now. If there is an event that he missed and is super-important, I'm sure there are some guys in there whose job is to tell him about it.

Just like, you know, the Pope doesn't have to personally learn kung-fu for self-defense, because he has a whole bunch of guys in pyjamas and with halberds (and MP5's) for that. And he doesn't even have to personally set their shifts and approve their sick days, because he delegates that too.

But there's also something to be said for being that big and responsibility-free: very few things are that important as to NEED immediate attention. He doesn't have to go on stage and shake hands with the CEOs of Microsoft and IBM, like the CEO of, say, Oracle occasionally does, even though both have products competing with his. Because he's basically big enough (and I don't mean in a moral or whatever sense) to not need that kind of alliance games.

And we're talking the kind of responsibility-free where even the pedophilia scandal, or the Magdalene concentration-camp... err... "asylums" thing, or even flaunting the ignoring equality laws because some corporate founder thought otherwise 2000 years ago, barely did a little eroding the market share.

So, yeah, short of Jesus coming down from the heavens during the Easter speech in the Vatican square and saying, "guys, that dude in the funny dress TOTALLY doesn't speak for me", there are very few things that would require him to see them on the news RIGHT NOW. He could literally be in a coma, and even that kind of being unable to respond RIGHT NOW still wouldn't bankrupt his corporation.

So basically, who cares?

THAT SAID, I would also not take everything he says literally. I would expect that, like any CEO, whatever he says has probably been run past some PR guy first. (Even if it may be a guy in a funny dress.) And he wouldn't even be there if he wasn't good at saying whatever he's supposed to say. He was put there by a board of directors... sorry, cardinal council, not won that position at the lottery.

It's as valuable as the accountants say; but that is hardly the point. If the Pope wants to live in an efficiency with an old piano and have no TV or pizza that's fine. Let him also dispose of every other sellable asset of the church and then run it on the basis of donations from day to day as contributed by the faithful.

Surely God will ensure that this happens, just as He/It gave us the internet.

I wonder if Fox is trying to create excuses for why the Pope's pronouncements are so at odds with conservative Catholic talking points.

I would honestly suggest you read up on how those guys in pajamas got that job. Imagine a whole army with the courage and individual expertise of a Ranger Unit, and you get some idea of what anyone trying to attack the Pope might have to deal with

Incidentally, I do know. Not sure what it has to do with my point, though.

A decade or so ago, it was calculated if the Catholic Church were to sell everything it owned for a fair book value it would only earn enough money to run all its programs for about three weeks.

At the Parish level most branches of the Church already run on day to day donations. It was one of the reasons the Vatican bank was set up in the first place. Unfortunately the road to hell is occasionally paved with good intentions :(

I wasn't looking to counter the points of your post. I just thought your comments about the Swiss guard were a little harsh on a group people with a very proud tradition of being soldiers.

If he hasn't watched TV since 1990, then we should put him in front of the latest generation of high definition and watch him freak out.
