Continuation Part 14: Amanda Knox/Raffaele Sollecito

A thought came to me in the bath (lots of things come to me in the bath etc... </Peter Cook>).

Although it's been a huge surprise to everyone (except Frank), you could look at this ISC decision as supremely logical:

We are told that Italian institutions are very motivated by the idea of bella figura. Over the past several years, many people (including a significant number in this thread) - the lawyers, the former FBI agents, the bloggers, the journalists, the DNA experts, the TV presenters have slowly, slowly inched the cargo ship of lies around and sent it back to port.

The majority of public opinion seemed to have changed in favour Amanda and Raffele's innocence, and recent sterling efforts in Italy had really put the nail in the guilter coffin.

So where did that leave the ISC? To preserve bella figura when everyone was saying the case was a joke, the best thing to do was acknowledge the truth and the facts and fully exonerate! Who would have guessed that we'd be praising the ISC like this?!

What this shows is that the innocencisti victory is complete in every way - a full, unambiguous acquittal, along with thoroughly changing public perception of the case and revealing the truth.

Well done everyone, I really believe that every tiny contribution helped.

Great trading posts to you as well. I know I was a minor contributor compared to the likes of Rolfe, Numbers, Chris, Kaosium, Charles Wilkes, Dan O, Anglo YOU and so many others I am failing to mention.. (please forgive me) I just hope I contributed a little something to the discussions the last 4 years.

Tim McGraw.

I refuse to forgive you.

No, Yummi has written this:

I'd like to add that while it's true that Sollecito's family acted as if the outcome was expected in advance, also the the Knox family is reported of doing so by some newspapers. Those reports about "smiling faces" and people bringing drinks waiting for the verdict didn't go unnoticed.

(if you believe him)

This type of thinking shows a fundamental and deeply troubling level of conspiracy theorising.

Does "Yummi" think that the Italian Supreme Court - a body that is constitutionally at arm's length from the executive branch of government - was "nobbled" somehow, either by the Italian executive directly, or even by the US State Department indirectly? And does "Yummi" further think that the Knox/Sollecito families could have been party to the SC deliberations and essentially informed in advance of the decision?

Risible. If "Yummi" really does think this, or anything along these lines, then he ought to be turning his attention away from the Knox/Sollecito case and towards the fundamental issue that his country's criminal justice system is corrupt from the very highest level downwards, and cannot be trusted by the people to do its job independently and without fear or favour as required.

Anyone still of the opinion that "Yummi" is balanced, reasonable and informative in his arguments.........?

Um, weren't they the ones declaring that they were poised with the champagne bottle?

Yes. It will be very interesting when reading the SC's motivations whether this point carried much weight in their deliberations. It would be quietly excellent to think that one of their reasons for concluding that Knox and Sollecito didn't participate in the murder was that the murder had to have happened well before 10pm, and almost certainly before 9.30pm - as evidenced by the stomach/duodenum evidence, alongside other evidence such as Kercher's failure to call her mother back, the evidence of tampering with the phones at 10pm, the laundry in the washing machine, the state of dress of Kercher and her apparent failure to have unpacked her bag, etc......)

Yes. I would so like to see that in print from the final authority, because to me it's always been the simplest, most straightforward demonstration of absolute innocence.

PUUÙUHHHHHLLĹÈÈEAAÀSSßSEE!!!!!!!!! You too LJ... I knew I would fail to mention some of the best posters.... but I think I deserve a break since I'm posting with a tablet which is so much more difficult than with a keyboard on my PC... Good job LJ.

Barbie Latza Nadeau says

"The case, now closed forever, has been divisive from the start, pitting those who believe in Knox’s innocence against those who are certain of her guilt. "

Spot the deliberate deception. Winterbottom ended his film with the acquittal, from 3 and a half years ago. Despite everything he probably deserves kudos for that. Coming to a cinema near me? Somehow I doubt it, but who knows?

I'll take beliefs over certainty any day of the week. It is not beliefs that send people off the rails, it's when they become certain about them. There's no need to act ethically when you claim certainty.

Well, well well.

Killers have walked before and will walk again.
Must be hard to take for the Kercher family.

I see some posters are wondering what to do now. The option of attacking the ‘guliters’, cops, witnesses etc and more importantly the victim’s family and the victim herself long into the future is always available.

Not sure what anyone else thinks but by Platonov's standards this is bordering on a gracious concession post.

No indecipherable analogies to history, no mention of Brittany, I don't think I can identify the other quirks of composition, I truly gave up.

Well P, if that's an apology, I accept!!

The only "attack" I am concerned with is an attempt to make sure similar wrongful convictions do not happen.

Is the highlighted word a misspelling of "gauleiters"? Or is it "guilters"?

No it was a misspelling of ‘guilters’.

Why would the groupies attack the ‘gauleiters’ – many of their arguments and sources would suggest quite the opposite approach.

And yet based on your response there must have been some, and major ones at that.

When could we expect to see the motivations report translated into English? Am I right in thinking the guilt lobby, whatever their failings, came in handy for this kind of thing? I'm wondering if they might lose their enthusiasm now.

Ahem.

Whatever their enthusiasm for the task, I can assure you that we will be more than happy to provide a high-quality translation of that document, as we did for the Conti-Vecchiotti DNA report and the Hellmann-Zanetti motivation. (In the case of the former, ours is the only translation available, so far as I know.)

Indeed, you shouldn't be surprised if ours comes out before theirs. ;)

You are, of course, welcome to your opinion, whatever it may be.
