An unarmed man shot by a South Carolina trooper during a traffic stop repeated one question through his anguished cries as he lay wounded, waiting for an ambulance: "Why did you shoot me?"

Levar Jones' painful groans and then-Trooper Sean Groubert's reply — "Well you dove head first back into your car" — were captured by a dashboard camera in the trooper's car.

Groubert had stopped Jones on a seatbelt violation at a Columbia gas station and fired the shots moments after asking Jones for his license.

Later on the recording, Jones said he was just reaching into his vehicle for his identification after the trooper pulled up without his siren on. What appears to be his wallet can be seen flying through the air as Groubert fires four shots within seconds after confronting Jones.

Groubert's lawyer, Barney Giese, said the shooting was justified because the trooper feared for his life and the safety of others. But prosecutors and Groubert's boss disagreed.

The 31-year-old officer was charged with felony assault and fired less than three weeks after the Sept. 4 traffic stop.

At least we can all agree this officer is a **********, right ?

Seatbelt violation? Really? Give me break. This nut was looking to shoot him up some *******. But, he'll get off. They always do.

I read the story. Pretty clearly the cop flipped out. I'm in agreement that this one was a cop losing his cool.

It's beginning to look like the safest way to interact with cops is to shoot them on sight before they can shoot you.

We ask a lot of police: they must be able to make the right decision in situations that can be threatening to most other people. But that is why they are selected and trained. Many people are not suitable to be police. If we give someone the right to use a weapon, we are giving them the responsibility to use that weapon only when it is suitable and when we tell them it is okay to do so. Just like airplane pilots: panicking is not acceptable for the job description and if it happens to you and you make a serious error as a result, then you are probably not a suitable police officer or pilot.

It is even worse when you see the video (which I didn't see in the article linked by the OP):

All I can say is holy crap! If I see anyone trying to defend this cop in this thread my faith in humanity will die away completely.....

Sorry - didn't realize that article didn't have the video - I had a fewarticles open.

Yes, you must watch the video.

He's already been fired and is looking at 20 in jail.

But yea, besides that he'll be just fine.

Yes, that post was ridiculous. I very much doubt he woke up and said, "Today I plan to shoot an innocent man, lose my job, and end up in prison!"

Its a good thing there was a dash cam in this case. Hopefully, events of the past gew months will cause all PDs to have dash & body cams in the near future.

I can't help but notice the lack of black cops shooting white guy threads. I'm sure it happens though. *shrug*

Here you go.

Dashcam video shows deputy weeping after shooting 70-year-old man during traffic stop because he thought cane was a gun (VIDEO)

As the other cop consoles him, Knox sobs, "I promise to God it looked like a shotgun."

[York County Sheriff Bruce] Bryant defended his deputy at the news conference Wednesday, saying he couldn't have known the long, slender object Canipe pulled from the truck wasn't a weapon.

Saw the Video. NO question about this,no way this shooting was justified, and that is putting it mildly.
