• Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.

Future of the Forum

My question: is it possible to "lawsuit proof" a forum?

I was thinking this too. I am a numb-skull, but what if part of the registration agreement was a promise never to initiate lawsuits for anything posted within?

Perhaps casual browsers can be covered by something similar.

The content of posts is well policed by the MA anyway, so if we promise to criticise nicely, then they should promise to take criticism nicely.

I would not read too much into the statement. That fact she went back to correct and clarify a misstatement in a prior post is a certifiably Good ThingTM. This other bit I took as just "happy talk" filler and doesn't add information to the post (nor does it diminish the Good ThingTM aspect, either).

Sharon, is what jsfisher says true? Was the sentence I quoted from you meant to be nothing more than "happy talk" filler?

...If you have an innovative idea for making a JREF Forum more streamlined and less sprawling in topics and content, for example, that would be a worthwhile proposal.

Parasites like me like sprawling sites.

Somewhat seriously, this is troubling in the same way that my local library culling books is troubling.

I want to talk about music on a site like this, not a music site full of woo, or a dedicated microtonal forum attempting to convert the masses to its mission.

I'm not a parasite, but I like the sprawlingness of this forum.

This sounds exactly like the kind of talk that got the forum split into public and private sections.

Even better than my own "numbskullery". :)

Usernames, passwords and emails must be transferred, because the functionality of the software depend in them. No email = no way for the forum to communicate with the user = no way to recover forgotten passwords

I suspect the forum software itself might have problems as well if the email column was simply empty (but that's easily fixed by updating with a hash of the email or something).

One way that this could work is if the passwords stay the same, then you could simply log into the new site and the first task would be to update the email address on the account.

Simple in principle, difficult in practice. If this was the path then it'd be good to do something that, combined with an announcement, to force everyone to log back in.

That'll catch the most frequent users, and the rest would be a manual process probably, someone wants to claim an account, they email from their account email and then it can be verified against the recorded email hash.

Someone doesn't know their password or have access to the email they used to register? Can't verify identity then and they'll have to register a new ID.

The fact that numerous posters have said they had little or no interest in or even awareness of JREF beyond the forum, if it reflects a common attitude on the forum, supports JREF's own case- namely that forum users are not , typically, JREF member / contributors.
We can't say we ignored JREF, then grumble that JREF ignored us.

I think it is regrettable that we largely did talk past each other. I think JREF could have made more of the forum. I think the forum could have been more interested in JREF.

It's all water under the bridge now. The split was inevitable eventually and it might have gone worse. We only have to remember the RDF disaster.

Whether we, as individuals, choose to support JREF in future is a purely personal call, as it always was. It's certain the JREFenix Phorum will need financed and by contributing to that we presumably save JREF the costs of this one , so that's a donation of sorts.

A couple of days back, we were in shock. Now we are at the indignant stage and we may be in the huff for a few weeks, but when we look back from a month or so down the line, I hope we will remember that JREF built this community- even if that was never it's principal aim. Personally, my respect for James Randi and for what he has struggled to do, continues.
We are leaving, but let's not forget our roots.

= sockpuppet = instant banning

As long as they don't start using their old account again, I don't see why a special exception couldn't be made.

ETA: I suppose that depends on trusting that they really are who they claim to be... OK, there is a problem with that.
