The Electric Comet theory

Not open for further replies.
Well that shows that you:
1. cannot google very well, I found it in like 2 seconds
Clever you. Thing is it wasn't available on-line last time I checked many moons ago. The link to it in the Alfven papers HERE simply says "Not Available" and still does. So, I say again, thank you sincerely.
2. you have no idea of what is happening in mainstream cometary physics, because the Alfven model is THE starting point for describing the interaction of the solar wind with the comet.
Well that's a bit of an exaggeration. True I only dabble these days, browsing NASA, Soviet Union, Japan and the European Space Agency missions to comets when they produce, videos, articles and papers (if I can get access) and, of course, the EU/PC view of events, at the same time.

That is the whole idiocy of the EU/ES/EC crowd, they actually DO NOT KNOW chickenpoo about what is happening in mainstream space plasma physics. Most of them are amateurs who probably don't even have the slightes grip on electrodynamics (e.g. our friend Haig here) but they will take for gospel what Talbot or Scott or whoever is claiming, when it has been shown often (in this thread and in others) that these guys live in their own little world and don't have any idea about what is going on in the real world.
That's a little harsh tusenfem. Sure I'm no professional merely an interested amateur. Just an individual who makes my own mind up from what I've read and understand. I don't represent the EU/ES/EC crowd or anyone else, only me. So if you don't like how I put things across that's too bad. You should look in the mirror a little my friend.

Every time another sheeple will be send in with the same-old same-old claims (e.g. the X-rays from comets) and the whole discussion will start again and again and again.
You shouldn't show such contempt for the "sheeple" it's the public, after all, that pay (though taxes) for most, not all, of the funding for the science professionals studies and projects. Shouldn't be too much trouble for some civility and accountability?

I wonder, if indeed we (i.e. mainstream physics) got everything wrong, how come that we can use Alfven's theories (MHD) to model the interaction of a comet with the solar wind and get results that agree with the observations that we have? I guess it is just dumb luck, or we are so corrupt that we twist the dials in such a way that we get out "what we need."
What did "we (i.e. mainstream physics)" get right before the space craft missions to comets? Seemed to be FULL of surprises each time a new comet nucleus was encountered!

Are you a believer in the Dirty Snowball Model of comets tusenfem? ie ..
• Comets are composed of undifferentiated “protoplanetary debris” - dust and ices left over from the formation of the solar system billions of years ago.
• Radiant heat from the Sun sublimates the ices. The vapor expands around the nucleus to form the coma and is swept back by the solar wind to form the tail.
• Over repeated passages around the Sun, solar heat vaporizes surface ice and leaves a “rind” of dust.
• Where heat penetrates the surface of a blackened, shallow crust, pockets of gas form. Where the pressure breaks through the surface, energetic jets form.

Has any of the above changed since the actual encounters of spacecraft with comets?

The EU/PC understanding is this ...

Immersed in the plasma of the interplanetary medium, a comet may be associated with:
Electrostatic charging of the comet nucleus,[3] and, charging of the dust,[4] resulting in levitation of dust from the comet surface,[4]
Coagulation of grains with opposite potentials,[5] and the opposite process, disruption (break-up) of grains with high potentials,[4]
Plasma instabilities in the tail,[4]
Folding of the interplanetary magnetic field into the tail of the comet (Alfvén's "folding umbrella" hydromagnetic model, 1957)[6] [7]
A cometary current system including plasma tail streamers separated by a neutral current sheet, with a total current exceeding 108A,[7]
A shock-ionopause current system, a tail current system, and a field-aligned auroral current system,[2]
The flow of such field-aligned currents leading to the generation of strong localized field-aligned electric fields (double layers),[2] [8]
Acceleration of electrons to keV energies in such double layers would lead to the observed enhanced fluxes of suprathermal electrons.[2]
Production of X-rays (e.g. such as those detected from Comet Hyakutake,[9][10][11] confirming the presence of Birkeland currents (field-align currents),[12]
Jets, such as those produced and modelled by Kristian Birkeland's theory,[13]
The generation of magnetic fields and electric currents in cometary plasma tails, up to a billion Amps, [14] first proposed by Alfvén in 1957,[6] and "strikingly established during the crossing of the plasma tail of Comet Giacobini—Zinner by the ICE spacecraft on September 11, 1985 (Smith et al., 1986)"[15] [7]
Currents in the cometary atmosphere,[16]
Outbursts from the comet nucleus resulting form macroscopic electric double layers,[17]
The origin of comet striae (banding) in dust tails,[18]
Inner coma cometary plasma formation by the critical ionization velocity mechanism,[19] [20]
Filamentary structure in comet tails interpreted as evidence of field-aligned currents (Birkeland currents),[7]
A "cometary aurora" due to "current discharges into the atmosphere from the tail"[21]
Possible ionization of the inner coma due to cross-tail currents closing through the cometary head.[22]

Where you surprised by jets on the "dark" side of comet nucleus tusenfem? Or did you or the mainstream expect it?
In 2004, NASA's Stardust spacecraft on a mission to comet Wild 2 (pronounced "Vilt 2"), "found 20 jets, on both the sunlit side of the comet and, surprisingly, the dark side".[23][24]

Shouldn't be too much trouble for some civility and accountability?

No, because there's a bizarre belief going around these days that opinions have the same weight as fact, and that they are somehow on equal footing and deserve the same level of attention. They do not.

What did "we (i.e. mainstream physics)" get right before the space craft missions to comets? Seemed to be FULL of surprises each time a new comet nucleus was encountered!

Oh what a surprise! We have telescope views of comets and interprete them, in different wavelength etc. We come up with a model of how it works and in the early 50s Fred Whipple comes up with the term dirty snowball. A few years later Alfven comes up with the theory how tails are created. All WITHOUT in-situ measurements. This was picked up in popular literature, the dirty snowball. After first views of an actual cometary nucleus (Giotto @ Halley) we get another view, that maybe it is more like a "snowy dirtball", but that was not changed in popular literature. However, the draping of the field creating the tail is confirmed. But naturally there are going to be surprises. If everything was know than we could close all research institutes (which would save a lot of taxpayers money).

Are you a believer in the Dirty Snowball Model of comets tusenfem? ie ..

No, I do not believe in the dirty snowball, because with the missions we had we know that that was not the correct description, and the model develops itself, as we gather more data. We have seen the surfaces of comets in more detail, we have seen there a lot of dust on the surface, we have also seen that the albedo is one of the lowest that you can find in the solar system (i.e. the blackestest surfaces in the solar system). We have seen that dust collects itself in dells on the surface of the comet from pictures (we don't want Philae to land in such a region, because of the low gravity it might not be compacted and can be anyone's guess how deep).

Getting better views of comets, getting the size/volume, knowing the mass, we know that it has to be porous material.

If you have long-period comets, then yes, they are probably "pristine" ould matter, however 67P/CG with a 6 year orbit, has passed by the sun often and the surface will definitely be "weathered" (in my opinion) with little volatiles on the surface. The craters in the surface of the comets show that there are impacts of smaller bodies (micro-meteorites) on the nuclei, also creating dust.

Vapour/gas escapes from the comet, and dust too. Part of the gas gets ionized and picked up by the solar wind magnetic field. The plasma will impede the magnetic field to flow aroundthe nucleus and gets hung up (Alfven's model). That is the gas/ion tail. The dust that escapes from the surface basically follows behind the comet and gets blown outward by the solar wind and radiation.

As soon as the comet enters Jupiter's orbit the solar irradiation is strong enough to start warming up the nucleus. Outgassing starts, which can be variable which we know, and which 67P/CG has also shown.

Has any of the above changed since the actual encounters of spacecraft with comets?

Yes, things are in a constant flux of further understanding.
That is what science is, studying stuff, and improving the models that you have with the new data. That is why we send Rosetta in space, not "to confirm the 1950's dirty snowball" but to get the best data ever to understand comets.

Electrostatic charging of the comet nucleus,[3] and, charging of the dust,[4] resulting in levitation of dust from the comet surface,[4]

Yes, the nucleus will be charged, probably not as much as a large asteroid (as in the paper linked above), dust naturally can also be charged (just do a literature search on dusty plasmas at comets). Levitation? maybe, apparently it does not happen as much on the moon as thought. With the escape velocity much much smaller at the comet, the dust if it levitates, will probably be lost to the comet in the dust tail (the charged dust does not magnetize that well).

Coagulation of grains with opposite potentials,[5] and the opposite process, disruption (break-up) of grains with high potentials,[4]

That will be less likely near the comet, as far as I know (I am not a dust expert) the sticking together of dust does not happen that much. Just oppositely charged is not enough, collisions will most often lead to charge exchange and not clinging together.

Plasma instabilities in the tail,[4]

Duh! there are dozens of papers on plasma instabilities in the tail in mainstream science.

Folding of the interplanetary magnetic field into the tail of the comet (Alfvén's "folding umbrella" hydromagnetic model, 1957)[6] [7]

Already said above, the draping of the field around the comet, creating the tail. All mainstream, nothing EC there. Does the EC say anything about nested fields? Did you know that if you fly by Halley, you can actually see the various direction changes that happened in the solar wind in the piled up magnetic field in the cometosheath?

A cometary current system including plasma tail streamers separated by a neutral current sheet, with a total current exceeding 108A,[7]
A shock-ionopause current system, a tail current system, and a field-aligned auroral current system,[2]

Well, total current could well be 108 A and if Mendis says so about the streamers, then it will probably be so (I would need to read that paper, but it is too late now). Naturally, there is a current sheet in the tail, because of the oppositely directed magnetic field and there will be other current sheets, e.g. at the front in the magnetosheath (see Laakso 1997).

Don't know what a "shock-ionopause" is, so I cannot comment on that.
Naturally, with the tail being dynamic, just as at Earth, there can be reconnection and tail detachment events, and that can lead to acceleration of particles towards the comet. If that can actually lead to "aurora" as Mendis seems to claim, I am skeptical.

The flow of such field-aligned currents leading to the generation of strong localized field-aligned electric fields (double layers),[2] [8]

The creation of double layers depends on a lot of stuff. electric field will be there, and have been observed (see Laakso), but not every electric field is a double layer, the EU/ES/EC crowd does not seem to understand that.

Acceleration of electrons to keV energies in such double layers would lead to the observed enhanced fluxes of suprathermal electrons.[2]

There are LOTS of methods to get suprathermal electrons, double layers are not the magical objects that the EU/ES/EC want them to be, and as above, not every electric field is a double layer.

Production of X-rays (e.g. such as those detected from Comet Hyakutake,[9][10][11] confirming the presence of Birkeland currents (field-align currents),[12]

NO no no, that has already been discussed above. The X-rays are completely described by charge exchange events between highly ionized solar wind ions (e.g. O7+) with neutrals from the comet. This is for the line production (and shown to by laboratory experiments!!), the background production is completely described by bremsstrahlung of electrons in the cloud (see page 8 if I am not mistaken, discussion by Tim Thompson). I see no reason whatsoever that Xrays are confirming the presence of "birkeland currents" (but I think Ian Tresman should write there field aligned currents).

Jets, such as those produced and modelled by Kristian Birkeland's theory,[13]

Birkeland's theory does not explain jets. All the ideas of Birkeland have no merit, because of false assumptions.

The magnetic field in the tail is solar wind magnetic field not created by plasma currents, but the other way around, plasma currents (the cross tail current) is created by the magnetic field. And yes, it was measured by ICE.

Currents in the cometary atmosphere,[16]

Same point over and over again.

Outbursts from the comet nucleus resulting form macroscopic electric double layers,[17]

No idea, I see an abstract of a conference presentation there, and it reads rather weird.

The origin of comet striae (banding) in dust tails,[18]

Sorry, no dust expert here.

Inner coma cometary plasma formation by the critical ionization velocity mechanism,[19] [20]

CIV could play a role near comets, but only when we get there can we get actual insight in whether it is really important.

Filamentary structure in comet tails interpreted as evidence of field-aligned currents (Birkeland currents),[7]

Again currents?

A "cometary aurora" due to "current discharges into the atmosphere from the tail"[21]

Substorm process on the comet tail see above (methinks Ian Tresman repeats himself a bit much)

Possible ionization of the inner coma due to cross-tail currents closing through the cometary head.[22]

Looking at what Mendis writes, it is not clear whether this actually happens or is possible near the comet.

I was not working on cometary physics back then, but I see no reason why it could not happen. The comet rotates gets heated and it can well be that the pressure unloads itself on the back side too, but the day side would be more logical. I cannot get to the Science paper which models this, though.

So, now Ian Tresman only cited mainstream physics, so you can hardly say that that is the EC view.

Now why don't you cite us some EC papers?

Cosmology in the plasma universe: an introductory exposition.
Acceptance of the plasma universe model is now leading to drastically new views of the structure of the universe. The basic aspects of cosmological importance are: 1. The same basic laws of plasma physics hold everywhere; 2. mapping of electric fields and currents are necessary to understand cosmic plasma; 3. space is filled with a network of currents leading to the circular and filamentary structure of matter; and 4. double layers, critical velocity, and pinch effects are of decisive importance in how cosmic plasma evolves. This paper reviews a number of the outstanding questions of cosmology in the plasma universe.

Haig, I'm noticing that Reality Check has a whole list of issues with your hypothesis that you do not seem to be addressing. Could you address those specifically?

Hi Earl, I have answered RC questions, many times, but it seems he doesn't like my responses. So it seems pointless to continue trying ... but I may do again, if I get really bored and have time to spare.

You could just scroll back and see my past replies to him.

Well tusenfem, Alfven warned about the way mainstream were using his MHD theories and this is why ...

However, accounting for the whole of our observed non-uniform parameter distribution we calculate an energy flux of 9−24 W m−2, which is 4 − 10 times below the energy requirement for solar wind acceleration.Hence, our results indicate that transverse MHD waves as resolved by SDO/AIA cannot be the dominant energy source for fast solar wind acceleration in the open-field corona

A new scientific study has further deepened one of the longstanding mysteries of solar physics. For decades scientists have struggled to explain why the solar wind accelerates as it moves away from the Sun in defiance of gravity. In more recent years, theorists have suggested that so-called transverse magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves could explain both the problems of solar wind acceleration and anomalous coronal heating. However, for the first time researchers using the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) have directly measured the transverse wave motions in solar-polar plumes. They have found that the energies of the so-called magnetic waves fall four to ten times below the minimum requirement to explain the acceleration of the solar wind. Dr. Michael Clarage weighs in on this discussion.

Boooooooooring, there are actually too many processes that can accelerate the solar wind. Just coming up with one example that cannot performt the act by itself, note that you quoted the following (my bolding) transverse MHD waves as resolved by SDO/AIA cannot be the dominant energy source for fast solar wind acceleration is not a negation of mainstream science. In your hurry to discredit mainstream science, thinking that if you can find a mistake it will automatically "prove EU/ES/EC correct" you once again forgot to do some comprehensive reading of the actual part that you quoted.

The only thing that Alfven complained about with respect to his MHD theories was that the people were using the frozen in condition (which is a key point in MHD) suddenly all the time, without checking if it is appropriate or not. That was in the early years after MHD was presented. Nowadays, every plasma physics student is taught when MDH is and is not applicable. Interestingly, the frozen in condition seems to applicable a whole lot, because of the extremely high conductivity of space plasmas usually at low plasma beta. Look up the paper by Tony Lui, a mainstream "renegade" who actually checked where in the Earth's magnetosphere the frozen in condition breaks down, using actual satellite data.

That is Alfven about the universe, now please cite an electic comet paper as I asked, that actually calculates the water production that is observed.

This is a thread about electric comets not about the futher nonsens of the electric universe. That has its own thread somewhere.

This IS relevent tusenfem and on topic imo.

Electric comets make themselves visible in the electrical envirment of our Electric Sun but that happens in an Electric Universe.

That's why this paper is relevant and why Alfven is important.

Show some papers on comets that actually calculates the water production that is observed, I'm interested.

yadayadayada, everthing is electric.

No, I don't show anything, I am asking YOU, thank you very much.
If you want to read about water from comets, read the latest Rosetta Miro results.
Answer me this: Is EDM able to create the amount of water which is observed to come from the comet, and if so, show us the actual calculations.

But I guess we will get anothe non-appropriate commet from our most beloved troll.

The solution!

Let's all follow the new EU guru: Dame Edna Everage

Let me see now ... there is a lot of plasma in the universe, therefore Wal Thornhill MUST be right, when he writes about Electric Comets.

Have I understood you correctly, Haig?

I decided to check this.

So I did just that, scroll back and read your past replies to RC.

Guess what I found, Haig?

Lots of stuff like this:
Reality Check said:
The layering is an interesting twist that should not exist with respect to "your" current understanding of these "dirty snowballs".
Scientists have a possible explanation (colliding protocomets) as you would have found if you had bothered to read the full article.

Definitely not electrical discharges: The totally stupid electric comet idea has been debunked
I'm sure mainstream will continue to try and explain away the electrical nature of comets with more ad hoc stuff ;)

In a few days we should have some interesting data/ pictures ... that's why I posted this
Maybe you'd like to present some concrete evidence?

Evidence which shows, objectively, that you really truly did answer RC's questions?

I, for one, would like to know why I couldn't find any.

To be perfectly clear: I am NOT calling you a liar.

For the general public a comment should be placed here too.

The claim by Haig that mainstream has the "dirty snowball" model of a comet (see post #1381 and that the electric comet people have the other model is basically Haig creating a strawman argument.

The first model (before satellites) was the dirty snowball, which has since then developed further. However, in studying the comets, both in observations and theory, basically all the things that Haig wants to claim for being the "electric comet" view, are all derived from mainstream physics sources, some more reliable then others, some probably disproved by now by further observations and theoretical modeling.

The only thing that is truly EC is the creation of water outside the comet, either by "recombination of solar wind protons with OH- from the comet" (which is basically energetically impossible), the production of water of OH through "electric discharge machining" (EDM) which asks for a lot of discharges the signatur of which has not been measured by any satellite, and there is the heliospheric electric field, which has not been shown to exist, which is apparently charging or discharging or whatever the comet.

However, the EU/ES/EC will keep on claiming that mainstream space physics is not interested in electric fields and currents, which is demonstratably incorrect.

It's sad.

Apologies, my request wasn't clear. I didn't mean to ask you to merely reply to his questions, as I know you have. What I meant to ask was for you to actually provide some evidence, with a strong focus on mathematically proving the claims. I would not consider blowing off a question "addressing the question". I've seen you make a great deal of claims, then cite other works either out of context or just disreputable papers or people in general, but never actually provide actual evidence that bolsters your claims.

Now, given NASA's got a robotic fun box homing in on a comet, what does your hypothesis predict it will find when it gets there, and why? And if it doesn't find what you expect, will you change your mind? If not, why?

Did you know he is regarded as the father of the Electric Universe / Plasma Cosmology ?
We know that people do lie about Hannes Alfvén being the "father" of EU/pc (note the lower case - the modern "plasma cosmology" is not Hannes Alfven's invalid Plasma Cosmology).
We also know that Hannes Alfven was a competent scientist and would be appalled at the insanely bad EU/pc "science". That anyone would base their science even partially on mythology should appall any reasonable person :p!

We have the usual EU/PC idiocy of claiming that Hannes Alfven's invalid Plasma Cosmology model is their non existent "plasma cosmology":
Plasma Cosmology - Woo or not: plasma cosmology does not exist! (and so is scientific woo) - from 23rd July 2008 !
The scientific theory of Plasma Cosmology is that of Hannes Olof Gösta Alfvén. This was expanded upon by Anthony Peratt, especially in the area of galaxy formation.

But the "plasma cosmology" that has emerged in this thread is not Plasma Cosmology and is not a scientific theory. Since it's proponents claim that it is a scientific theory that makes it crackpottery.
....

Then there is the embarrassing "Model of The Plasma Universe" 1986 paper by Hannes Alfvén where he applies a plasma model to the formation of the Solar System and Saturn's C ring. The paper may be excusable due to the state of knowledge in 1986.

Not too far from this ..

ELECTRIC COMET MODEL:
Wrong, Haig: NASA's Swift Satellite Tallies Water Production of Mars-bound Comet is valid science about the production of water at the comet nucleus from frozen gases. The detection of the water is from the destruction of water.
Between May 27 and 29, Swift's Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope (UVOT) captured a sequence of images as comet Siding Spring cruised through the constellation Eridanus at a distance of about 2.46 AU (229 million miles or 368 million km) from the sun. While the UVOT cannot detect water molecules directly, it can detect light emitted by fragments formed when ultraviolet sunlight breaks up water -- specifically, hydrogen atoms and hydroxyl (OH) molecules.
"Based on our observations, we calculate that at the time of the observations the comet was producing about 2 billion billion billion water molecules, equivalent to about 13 gallons or 49 liters, each second," said team member Tony Farnham, a senior research scientist at UMCP.

The ELECTRIC COMET MODEL is a fantasy held by people who do not know basic physics or even arithmetic!
Haig (7th July 2014), is 3.0 different from 0.6?

I was trying to show the contrast between EU/PC electric comet theory and mainstream comet theory as shown in the link.
The contract is really simple, Haig:
The EU/PC electric comet theory is believed in be people who do not even have a grasp of basic arithmetic ().
Mainstream comet theory works :jaw-dropp!

The failure of mainstream to detect much water on the surface of comets is the point, yet the detection of water in the coma is confirmed.
No, Haig: the point is that people ignorant about mainstream comet theory think that water sits on the surface of comets :eye-poppi!
People who know about comets know that the water is mainly below the surface of the comet nuclei.

You mean the crank David Talbott, Haig :p ?
David N. Talbott (born 1942) is an American author and long-time promoter of neo-Velikovskian ideas. Inspired by Immanuel Velikovsky, he proposes a "Polar Configuration"[1] involving the five planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Venus, Mars, Earth, in order, which formerly orbited the Sun as a linear assembly while it rotated about its barycenter and influenced human mythology.[2]

an individual who makes my own mind up from what I've read and understand.
The problem, Haig, is that you have "read and understand" a bunch of crank web sites, not any actual science. These ignorant people are so obsessed with their idea that they ignore the fact that the measured density of comets (~0.6 gm/cc) is that of asteroids (~3.0 gm/cc) and all of the other points in Electric comets still do not exist! (26th August 2013)

The physical evidence is that Dirty Snowball Model is sort of correct for 1999.
  • We measure that comets have the density of dust plus ices.
  • Physics tells as comets fall toward the Sun they will heat up. Physics tells us that will cause ices to sublimate onto vapor that will "expands around the nucleus to form the coma and is swept back by the solar wind to form the tail".
  • Physics tells us that the removal of ices from a dust + ice nucleus will leave a dusty and dirty surface.
  • Physics tells us that "Where heat penetrates the surface of a blackened, shallow crust, pockets of gas form. Where the pressure breaks through the surface, energetic jets form". This is confirmed by observations of jets!
[*}Physics tells us that we expect jets on the "dark side" of comet because it is the entire comet that heats up - just not so much on any side away from the Sun.
Science has progressed in the last 15 years, Haig :jaw-dropp!
The current model is more of an "Icy Dirtball Model".
This looks one of one of the EU/pc delusions - that science about a subject stopped in year X, e.g. 1957 with Alfvén's paper on comet tails or 1999 as you cite.

The EU/pc understanding is ... delusional to say the least, Haig :p!
