I'm of the view that even mentally disturbed people can be very influenced by ideas; I don't subscribe to the view that events like these are deterministic. I think he found an ideology that allowed him to blame other people for his failures and intensified those feelings. He may have found something else had it not been for misogynism, but it's difficult to say.
For an extreme comparison: If he had believed that Jews were to blame for his failures and subscribed to World Jewry youtube channels, even if none of those actually advocated murdering Jews, don't you think it would be fair to say that he was influenced by the antisemitism movement?
You can't really place the blame for the event on anyone but him and possibly a system that failed to care for him properly, but I still think it is important and interesting to show how some movements attracts and reinforces the ideas of disturbed people.
That's a good post. I think you're on to something. Some ideologies are outright toxic, even if their adherents don't automatically turn into murderers.
We certainly have limited information at some point. But you really don't think that a guy who goes around on a shooting spree and takes out a half-dozen people and who has three dead bodies in his apartment and who wrote a 100,000-word manifesto and whose parents tried to get him help a few months ago MIGHT have a little more going on in his head than misogyny?
That's like saying Jeffrey Dahmer was motivated to kill primarily by hunger.
(And also keep in mind that his statements reflect misandry as well. We seem to be forgetting that he hated men, too.)
As I stated before, I am not blaming the rampage on his Asperger's. I am saying that a person who does such a thing CLEARLY HAS SOME MASSIVE MENTAL ISSUES OUTSIDE OF ASPERGER'S. Shouldn't we blame those before we blame misogyny? Or his misandry? Or his all-around disdain for humanity?
Are you saying that homosexuality was a motivating factor for Jeffrey Dahmer?
Are you saying that technophobia was THE PRIMARY REASON that the Unabomber did all of that Unabombing?
I'm just saying that when you look at this event, it's unfair to try and blame "MRAs" or whatever community he was into. He did something indicative of "crazy." Why blame misogyny instead of "crazy?"
You really, really want to avoid talking about his misogyny, don't you? I wonder why...
Blaming "crazy" is dismissive and counter-productive. It explains nothing and solves nothing. Misogyny is very real and extremely toxic, however, and it
can be fought against, even if it'll never completely go away.

I don't think that's fair. The person who made this about misogyny was the killer. How can his views on women be divorced from discussion of the issue when he, himself, described them as his motivation for the killing?
He wrote a big-ass manifesto about his misogyny, but let's not talk about that because CRAZY YA KNOW, there, done. *wipes hands on pants*
Well, I skimmed the manifesto and it's a lot simpler than that. The guy never actually asked anyone out. Instead, he just kind of puttered around town all the time in hopes that his dazzling majesty would cause attractive girls to approach him.
Yeah, it's kind of amazing how he never really describes an actual rejection to my knowledge. Though I'll admit I didn't read the whole thing because it's quite possibly the best example of tl;dr ever written.
Apparently this is Obama's fault for making everyone think they deserve things.

Good gods, no thanks. That's always the mistake I make. Read something awful, then scroll down to the comments, close the browser tab in disgust thinking "why oh why did I scroll down again". I never seem to learn.
What really weirded me out, besides the fact that he liked The Phantom Menace, was the strange lottery fixation he went through. What was that all about? Sounded like he got plenty of cash from relatives; he obviously wasn't hurting for money if he could buy Armani gear and drop almost two grand on guns on a whim.
It's even more hilarious considering how he was so utterly
depressed at not winning the lottery. He describes this event as so profoundly shocking... and I didn't see a "in hindsight that was stupid" or "of course it was foolish and silly of me". Nope. Just another devastating event in his poor, wretched spoiled brat life.
