There where I used to stand
Posters / Lurkers:

A recent trend in this sub-forum is the "Appeal to the Lurker". You know who you are. You've registered. You've read. You think about posting but aren't sure you want to yet. Well here's your chance to get your feet wet. I'm seeking your opinion in this poll. Please take the time to select a choice. You needn't reply with a post but your input is valuable and welcome.

The information I'm seeking is:

1) If there are any lurkers regularly reading this forum and

2) How many you are and

3) Where you stand on the issues.

I've chosen to make this as simple and straightforward a poll as possible, but if there's anything you want to discuss, please do not hesitate to do so in this thread.

I've chosen to make the voting public btw, just to keep it honest. This means others will see how you voted.

Lurker/Debunker here. I post very occasionally, but mostly I don't. My area of expertise is music, so that doesn't help much around here. However, I like to think of myself as more rational than the average person.

I enjoy reading about this conspiracy theory, mainly because it affected me pretty deeply when it happened. I watched the second plane hit as it happened on TV. I enjoy learning as much as I can and listening to knowledgeable people expound on subjects I know little about.

I have a similar affinity for the Apollo Moon Landing and the nutjobs that think that was faked. I don't like the nutjobs, but they tend to afford me quite the opportunity to learn from others.

Oh, this could be fun. There was one guy over on apollohoax who insisted all the "lurkers and viewers" were supporting him, and saw through us gummint disinformationists. So I started a thread inviting them to delurk and chime in.

I had to invoke the "mercy rule" in the seventh inning, but we had enough for two games. Something like 18 "lurkers and viewers" chimed in, all of them disagreeing with the guy and several questioning his sanity. The best remark of all was "I think you guys spend way too much time fighting with mental patients".

This forum is the closest thing to Planet X there is, so the option is implied in all choices.

Way to move the goalposts, use the strawman fallacy, beg the question and ad hom everybody.:)

I'll head for the egrets now.

Lurker/debunker here. I enjoy reading through a few threads but generally don't feel the need to chime in since, by the time I read them someone else has usually destroyed whatever was being passed for an argument by the resident truthers.

I've never seen a cogent argument or theory put forwards here by any truther and the level of ignorance and denial sometimes astounds me but there's usually some humour to be had from the truther side and some useful knowledge to be gained from the rational side.

:)

Poll has one problem: That you have no sacrificeal anode for non-lurkers / regular contributors.
Should have options "Regular contributor / (truther|debunker|undecided)"

Plus: At what point does a lurker become a contributor? With their first post in this subforum? With moore than 10 under their belt?

I saw a former co-worker recently. His son is the same age as mine (16), so we were talking college situations (his son plays cello so wants to go to a conservatory or else he wants to be a math major), and he was saying how many of the musically inclined kids have some other major interest (biology, physics (himself), etc.).

Your expertise may be music, but in truth that suggests you have a strong affinity for the logical, ordered world-view. It's not a "however", but part of your essential makeup, all tied together. :)

stupid poll, i dont call myself a debunker nor truther.
there are not much debunkers. there are mostly Debunking repeaters.....

I am not a lurker so I can't vote, but of course you expect all the lurkers to be anti-Truth.

They are all Illuminati foot soldiers terrified that the sun might rise and they all get turned to stone.

I was an unregistered lurker here for probably close on a year before I finally signed up.

I post infrequently to JREF, mostly because I have a serious problem with causing thread derail. I don't think this place would be very tolerant of my usual shenanigans, so I mostly post when I have something to say.

Which is why I have 150-something posts here instead of the 20,000+ elsewhere.

I voted lurker/debunker because I came to this site looking for some good logical facts to fend off an invasion of troofer-woo-barbarians on one of my usual haunts.

I should add, in case any of the local truthers decided to take my last post as evidence of "growing numbers" that the aforementioned "invasion" was not a large number of people, but a small handful with a VERY LARGE amount of C&P spam.

Which is not really such a great way to make new friends.

I'm mostly a lurker here, though I did just get roped into discussing my sex life as an alibi. I can't say as I like your options - any issue where two sides pretend there are only two sides suggests to me that the 'truth' is in the third option, somewhere in the middle. I am a debunker where I am sure of the science or rationality of the 'debunk' or the ******* lunacy of a particular 'Truth'. I am a 'truther' in the sense that I value truth in any sphere, I demand it in every sphere and I applaud the efforts of those more determined or capable than I to uncover truths (because people, and governments, lie sometimes, for all sorts of reasons - even to themselves. The human capacity for self-delusion seems infinite.)

I don't think we know all the truth about 9/11. I'm not sure we ever could. I am certain, though, that it doesn't involve missile pods, energy weapons, voice morphing, nanothermite, Nanny Ogg, UFOs, TV trickery, the lizard people, the Green Goblin, witchcraft, the wrath of god (any god, take your pick) or countless other ideas...let's be generous and call them creative brainstorming ideas...previously advanced or yet to be proposed.

I am certain that the truth involves people, who can be intransigently deceitful, supremely wicked and utterly misguided. 19 of them may have been "A-rabs who hate our freedoms" and were capable of outwitting the USA.

ETA: apparantly you can't say 'bat' unless you leave a space before the '****'

Nope, I'm not interested in the opinions of the regs as I know pretty much where they stand.

Erm... alrighty then. :boggled:

Actually I don't know what to expect, which is why I asked the questions. And I'm a little surprised by the voting so far, for what it's worth.

For those of you wanting me to define what a lurker is, for the purpose of this poll I consider a lurker to be a member who reads this board but posts here little or not at all. Post counts have nothing to do with it.

I do realize that it is a public board and readable to non-members who can be considered to be lurkers also, but their opinions aren't being sought in the other threads so no need to include them. They can register if they want to vote.

I "Lurked" here for about a year before I joined. I attempted to join a few times when the "Explosives" argument was presented back in 2008 or so. I thought better about entering the threads and ended up wasting Lisa Simpsons time sending me the link to sign up (sorry about that Lisa).

I average less than 2.5 posts per day but read/skim through most of the 9/11 threads. Does that make me a lurker? If it helps, at least half of my posts are snark or not in this sub forum.

You didn't define what a lurker was so I have no idea, as such I'll deffer from the poll until you better define what a "Lurker" is.

*smooches to Lisa Simpson for allowing me to waste her time* :o

I post infrequently but there's no way I believe in the "truther" crap.

Lurker/Debunker ... but I tend to stick to de-bunking on other forums and sites, including the only one on Bebo, aside from it taking up too much of my time already, you all have much greater expertise in engineering and physics than I.

Now retired, I was just a Dental Surgeon, with career in the Royal Air Force, the NHS as well as private practise, which isn't exactly helpful in engineering issues ... but now spend my days looking after my grand-children and find debunking to be waaaay more exciting than knitting ... the usual grand-motherly pursuit ... :boggled:

If everyone did that this place would be a ghost town.:)

Well I'd say this wasn't unexpected but it is a little surprising. C'mon truther lurkers, there are none of your numbers lurking here? Nobody on the fence either? How curious.

Lurker/Debunker

When I have the time I will often check out this board or the BAUT-forum, which also has a conspiracy-section, mainly about the moon-landing. My excuse is that I get to know a lot of interesting stuff about rockets, sky-scrapers, photography, explosives and other cool stuff from the active debunkers.

But I also get a certain guilty joy from reading a really mind-blowing stundie.

I came to this site in order get more information about all of this 9/11 stuff. I then lurked here for a while, using the resources available to get my information. Eventually, I came across some questions I couldn't answer with my own research, so I started posting a bit.

I chose the "undecided" option because I don't really fit into either of the other two categories. I'm not smart enough or experienced enough to consider myself a debunker, but I sure as heck don't believe any of the alternate theories. Some theories made a little sense at first (a bit of quick research fixed those issues), but a number where just laughable (a 150 kiloton nuke brought down the towers? That's a good one.)

So far, I am very thankful for these forums, as they have helped me a great deal.

But I also get a certain guilty joy from reading a really mind-blowing stundie.

I also enjoy the stundies, as they cheer me up when I make mistakes of my own. It's refreshing to see that there actually are people dumber than I am.

True definition of lurker here, (1'st post) been here reading for a couple years. Voted luker/debunker. Though I am not a debunker, don't even try. I have a good friend who has fallen for all the woo there is, she keeps sending me links to all the conspiracy sites, (911, big pharma, evil government are her main talking points) she is too hard headed to listen to any logic, I gave up trying to have an intelligent conversation with her on just about everything.

On a side note: She is so far gone. She was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, was about to have surgery, up & walked out of the pre-op, decided to go homeopathic instead. Blowing about $300 a week on her "treatments". Unless it comes from David Icke or Alex Jones, she refuses to listen.

I've given up on her.

I chose lurker/debunker because it's evident that those who believe in the movement have a deficient education. I do love slapping down an idiot who claims that testing the thermite in an oxygen atmosphere has no effect because thermite has it's own oxygen source.

That's very unfortunate, indeed, but I hope you haven't quite given up on her. My brother-in-law's wife did something similar. She was diagnosed with breast cancer and decided that she would self-treat with homeopathic remedies that she read about on the Internet. She's now dead.

Lurk/Debunk

I only participate when there is something worth discussing anymore. Pretty much all of the theories have been trotted out and slaughtered over the years.

Not much left but stuff to laugh at now.

I've given up on her.

I hope not, at the very least she should be shown LashL's post, if not the entire forum.

I chose lurker/truther. I didn't want Hans to be alone.

You two are actually disinfo. Both of you are paid shills, unless of course you're moonlighting. I've never minded a debunker occasionally fleecing truthers out of their lunch money, just don't forget the house cut. Kthxbye.

So still ZERO truthers here? Did somebody start populating the FEMA camps? I must've missed the memo.

I hope.

Somehow I don't think this is true. Good luck.

Well I suppose that I haven't totally given up, though damn close. Any time the topic comes up, be it 911, or homeopathy, I try and show her the "other" side, even given links to here. She wants no part of it, anyone who doesn't agree with her is a shill or been duped by the mass media. I avoid those subjects as much as I can now. I've led the horse to the water but it (she) refuses to drink it.

All I can do now is every time she emails me a link to some conspiracy site, I come here, look for a good debunking thread, send it to her, & say nothing more. I've tried every other approach, I just have to let her find the answer on her own. In the end I'm not willing to lose the friendship over it, known her for 20 years, we work together and just have to support her decisions and hope she comes to her senses before it's too late.

You posted as I was typing. I have shown her this forum and continue to do so. She once told me this site and everyone here is a "plant" or shill" lol.

Could she let us know where we can pick up a pay check? Talk about easy money!

Kinda wins the thread!

First post in almost 3 years on the forum and it's to self-identify as a lurker-debunker. Good one! I'm always amazed when someone starts these "Hey, you lurkers identify yourselves" threads and you guys really do come out. It's almost like there are lurkers out there just waiting to be invited in to play.

But welcome aboard, eh? We have a couple of people from Bytown on board.

Sorry to hear about your friend, though. That must hurt, but I can see giving up on her, actually. It's sort of like she's just booking folks for the funeral already.
