Earthquakes In Georgia USA

I live In Conyers GA and one day there was what I though was an explosion which shook the entire neighborhood. It turns out it was an earthquake under a lake near my house. It happened during a drought and after a rare heavy rain it caused some decaying granite that had been powdery dry to suddenly collapse. Georgia has no fault lines and no one ever thought of this happening.

What on earth gave you that idea?

The USGS site is a really good resource.

We've had earthquakes in Maryland. I remember once, my father, who had very severe heart problems, turned to my mother and said, "Did you feel that?" She made him go to bed and called the doctor. The next day it turned out what he felt was a 2.1 earthquake.

Ever hear of New Madrid?

It's not in Georgia. I sit not far from it. As Chief Safety Guy for some hospitals, I got more than a couple of chuckles for writing an earthquake annex to the safety plan.

I did a Joint staffex (sort of a CPX light) for an OOTW/MOOTW drill on how to handle the New Madrid fault with military assets. (Over ten years ago) If a big enough quake hits New Madrid, Georgia may well feel the effects.

Or not.

With that, I can agree.

On the other hand, Georgia isn't the place where such a shake would do the most damage, so my first post was a bit misleading.

Our scenario focused on the I-20, I-40 and I-70 commercial corridors, bridge lines, etc.

Georgia most likely hit by secondary effects, like "nothing going west for a while, all the bridges are down."

According to the card carrying smart guy (geologist) advising us, St Louis was going to be a complete wreck.

Two words:

Global

Warming

You probably need Algore to come fix it.

WTF, Tokie? You trolling here? Or maybe it's me, and I don't get some reference.

What has Global Warming, of whatever combination of causes, got to do with fault lines?

I worked with a girl that moved here to Memphis from California who would laugh whenever someone here mentioned earthquakes.

I had to point out to her that she was mere miles from the epicenter of the largest earthquake in the recorded history of North America.

About 20 years ago there was a 5.7 quake from that fault, it was enough to get the lights swinging in our house in suburban Chicago. Couldn't feel anything from the floor, I was sitting at a table reading a newspaper when I noticed the lights swinging. I quickly ruled out poltergeists or wind (the windows were shut) and deduced it had to be an earthquake, and I was right.

I live in Atlanta (Roswell area). There are fault lines in Georgia, but never produce any major quakes. It's rather rare that one is strong enough for people to feel, but it does happen. One woke me up about two years ago or so.

San Francisco it ain't, but quakes aren't unheard of here.

Quakes happen. Oh, well.

We had a dozen or so minor tremblers out here in Orange County, California during last week's wildfires. People were more concerned with their homes burning down to worry about a little ground movement.

The good news? This is probably the first and only place where last week's events could be referred to as "Shake 'N Bake." It's better than frying...

The drought Cainkane1 mentioned. One could argue it's a result of global warming.

Oops. I forgot.

Wasn't AGW supposed to increase hurricanes in the southeast US, which would greatly increase rainfall? Now the drought is also due to AGW? Is there anything that can't be attributed to AGW? It's amazing how AGW can cause drought and floods in the same place!

You ruled out poltergeists? So quickly? You obviously haven't watched enough of The Haunted! :D

I think both can true. I don't claim to be an expert but it seems to me that a specific area or region can experience drought due to AGW and there could also be an overall increase in the number and intensity of hurricanes.

Oh...sorry...just my kneejerk reaction these days...anytime there's mention of any natural event, since I know someone is going to blame it on or associate it with their religion, Global Warming, I just like to get ahead of the curve.

Remember the Indian Ocean tsunamis....yeah, virtually before the bodies had been sucked back out to sea, the environmentalwackos were shrieking that it was caused by Global Warming...then they toned it down to say "well, it's what things will LOOK like..."

They are blaming fires in CA that happen every year for oh, the past 500 that we know of, on it....they blamed the 500 year!!! drought here on it (now we get record precip) and they are blaming the drought in the US South on it...and the heavy snows here on it. And the mild weather in the upper midwest on it. And the heatwave in France and Britain...and the cold in NY....

See...ANY natural event is a harbinger of, result of, or example of ...Global Warming!!!

Or, one could more intelligently argue that its as a result of ...global cooling. That's what happened where I live during the so-called "Little Ice Age." In fact, it's believed the stress caused by the drought at that time, at least helped to put paid to the regions largest (then) most advanced civilization.

Say...there was a pretty severe drought in um...the 1930s as I recall, throughout much of the middle/south part of America.

Now...was that caused by GLOOOOBAAALLLLL WAAARRRRRMIIINGGGGGGG!!!1one!!@@1!?

Too?

Short answer: no.

In fact, anytime ANY weather occurs today it is because of GLOOOOOBAAAALLLLL WAAARRRMIIINNGGGGGGGG!!!!

A few years ago we had a severe drought here. I was told by a woman I knew who worked for a environmental alarmist foundation, that we'd "better get used to it" because it was going to be hot and dry like this forever, unless GW Bush signed Kyoto, of course.

She wasn't alone. Alarmists like her were screaming the same thing from the local and national news at that time.

I lost touch with her, but the drought ended a year or so later and we've been getting record levels of precipitation both in the form of rain and snow, and since it's actually, on avg. getting colder year round, I'd sure like to hear what she has to say.

Probably this: well, GW causes different weather in different areas at different times (just like climate has always done? I might ask) and so just because it is now colder and wetter here (about like it was oh, 20-25 years ago) does not mean GW is NOT happening, in fact, this unsettled weather is proof it is!

Yeah...which is why for as long as I've been alive people have been saying "don't like the weather here? Wait five minutes."

Tokie

You ruled out

You are (purposely, would be my guess) missing the point. We were told at the time of Katrina that we'd "better get used to it!!!" by the GW alarmist-proselytizers.

Now...I don't live on the coast and don't pay much attention to 'canes, so I may misremember but....how many dozens of them have hit the US...or hell, anywhere, since the 2005 season? Got to be what, 50, 60, anyway, right?

Right?

Hello?

Is this thing on?!

People have forgotten that one of the strongest earthquakes in US history occured around Charleston, SC.

Oh, great. Now even earthquake discussions turn into a debate about whether the Big Ten or the Big East or the SEC is better.

I know Nashville is "a city waiting to die", since it's right next to the location where the greatest recorded earthquake in the continental US is (not California.) It's just a little bit rarer than California, but still every hundred years or so. But why bother making buildings earthquake-proof, when the last big one was before big buildings?

I dunno, Tokie. It is neither my argument nor my concern. I could not possibly care less about global anything.

I just get annoyed by a grown-up using the tactic you use of all caps, too many letters, and a billion exclamation points.
